rods and hangers

if any of you guys out there are running the stock sec. rods and hangers on your ccqjet, look into some aftermarket ones. i just put DR rods and a B hanger on the 86....what a difference. way better throttle response, no bog, and it pulls harder. great investment for under $10.....

I finally got my B hangar inm (I had DR rods with an L hangar) and I can say WOW. Well worth the 3 bucks. There was no dry road to test this weekend, but I can spin the tires at 50 if I floor it now, before I could only do it at like 42 or 43 from a roll. The throttle resonse is much improved, and it will kick me as hard as my buddies LT1 if I hammer it. Actually I wouldnt know, the tires kept breaking loose and it scared the crap out of me.

It made enough difference to convince my father to get a set for his 67. He got a different set for it when he realized not all rods/hangars are equal. My mom even noticed a difference on my car (hey she pays the insurance, I guess she can drive it once in a while.)

ok, anyone that has DR rods, please take a caliper (ya know the tool that you use to see how thick something is).. and measure the tip of it. my car came with CH rods, and i bought DR rods... measured them today and the CH rods were 0.056 and the DR's were 0.057 !!!! its bigger and its supposed to make it richer???? i think i either got fake DR's , or something....

Maybe the power tip itself is longer on the DR's? I had stock rods in my Q-jet, and definetly noticed a difference, maybe its in my head?

the tip on the DR's is longer, then it tapers up and is more slender then my CH's .. but i just thought that the shorter, smaller diamerter tip would be better?

It seems to me that the longer power tip would put more gas in faster and flow more fuel overall. Where's fiveseven, Im surprised he hasnt jumped on this one yet.

Remember, they are an obstruction when in the secondary "jets" - they pull up in the direction from the hook end as the AV opens. If you measure from the hook to tip, you'll find they're all the same length, so the power tip being longer means it is richer at less AV opening. Same goes for the transition taper, narrower means richer sooner.

DR's are pretty good all-around rods. That's what comes in Edelbrock's Performer q-jets, intended for engines from 350 to 455 cid. Smaller engines won't open the AV all the way (unless it's a big-breathing, high-reving version), so that "automatically" adjusts mixture ratio to suit. Additional tuning is done with the hanger; lower letter equals holding the rods out more, so it'll get richer quicker.

Too late on the PM. Oh, well, found my rod chart printout in the process.

"...running out of fuel up top" typically is used to describe a fuel delivery problem. Is that what they meant? Q-jets don't have much fuel bowl capacity, so if the fuel pump isn't keeping it full, especially during WOT, then rods & hanger aren't going to fix anything.

Although it typically isn't needed, there is a .149" diameter needle & seat available to improve flow into the carb (the Edelbrock Performer RPM 850 CFM q-jet comes with it standard). Make sure the fuel pump and filter aren't the cause first, though (again assuming that's what "everyone" thinks your problem is).

OEM pump (mechanical) is new ... inline fuel filter is a week old...ditched the in carb filter. actualy im being told to richen up my primaries to see if that will help...but according to people on here, it will screw up my ECM im putting a pressure tester on it this weekend..well see where shes at.

What is the symptoms of running out of fuel up top? It isnt like valve float type? My car revs right up to 5600 or so in 1st, but in 2nd gear struggles above 5000 where it should be making power. It just doesnt like to rev above that. Could it be a fuel delivery problem. I plan on replacing my 31 year old valve springs anyways, but could fuel delivery also do the same? COme to think of it, I should replace the fuel filter anyways considering in dont know how old it is.

it really depends on symptoms. if you had vlave float, then when you reached a certian point.. then the car would just sit there andmake no power whatsoever..same goes for a bad fuel pump. but if you are running lean like i am, the bowls have a chance to recover (fill back up) if you have a good fuel system.. and this will allow the engine to keep pulling, but with hesitations.
