air filter assembly

I was looking over my air cleaner assembly and I realized that the filter sits really far down inside it and that only an inch or so looks like it would actually clean the air. The bottom part is completely blocked by the air cleaner. It would seem to me that this is a bad thing, and that I should want a greater portion of the filter to let the air that gets filtered go to the carb. Anyone know what I'm talking about???

Thats because you have a drop-base air cleaner, they're all like that. Thats the trade off for the extra hood clearance.

Does it actually make a difference? Hell if I know. Never seen it tested, or done so myself.

I put a little ring that I rigged in there to lift the filter up. Now there's a half inch stip of filter showing all around my air cleaner. The stock wing nut just barely works now because it's up higher. It sounds mean though, like when you have an open element air filter on it. I can't tell yet if it 's any faster or not, I haven't had the chance to really test it yet. But it only cost $0.77, thats worth the cool sound alone! (and my hood still cleared) :lala: :lala: :lala:

You could have accomplished the same thing by installing the air cleaner cover upside-down.

Actually, I had tried that already. It didn't work and turning the filter lid over looks like crap.

Or could have done the same thing by putting in a taller filter element...

Yeah, you need a slightly longer threaded rod to flip your lid.

I like running a K&N filter, and they're not really cheap, I already had the stock replacement, this was just a little experiment to see what would happen, it didn't cost much and had to ad atleast 1 HP. thats 1 HP for 77 cents, I think thats pretty good. I just wanted to let the PO people out there like me, know that there is a way. "There is always a way." -Sky
