Air cleaner question.
Air cleaner question.
I hope I have the right area for this question...
I have this book that shows 2 different things so I am confused. I have a 1985 Camaro Z28, V8 with a carb. On the air cleaner, how many areas for hoses are on there? I have on my car 2 hoses that I know of that aren't connected to anything and that goto the air cleaner. One is the oil blowout hose, and also theres another hose thats apart of the emissions system. I do know that those 2 hoses goto the air cleaner but I saw in a picture that there was another hole. So there was 3 total. I live in cali and I need to get my car smoged this saturday so I am trying to figure out if it is 2 or 3 so I can try to get the right one.

Welcome to the board!
The crankcase ventilation hose goes into the passenger side of the air cleaner, the vacuum line from the carb goes into a switch on the bottom of the air cleaner, a vacuum line goes from that switch to the valve on the neck of the air cleaner, and an aluminum hose duct goes from the bottom of that valve to the big hole on the top of the driver's side exhaust manifold.

Ok. one more question..would this air cleaner thats on this page. http://www.thirdgenracing.com/projects/air/ .... The performance part air cleaner, would that work on my car and would everything hook up? like the hoses and such?
The short answer is yes it will work, the vacuum port on the carb that the small hose comes from must be capped and you would only hook up the ventilation hose, and depending on the laws in your area it will probably not pass inspection.
When going to open element, you do away with the THERMAC part of the stock air cleaner. For emissions purposes, the stock air cleaner has a vacuum-operated valve that either allows air to come through the snorkel or forces the air to flow over the exhaust manifold. The idea is for the engine to only take in warm air while it is still warming up, helping the engine warm up faster. The valve is operated by a thermal vacuum switch located on the bottom of the air cleaner, which gets its vacuum from the small hose that goes into the carb. With an open element air cleaner, you just cap off the vacuum port on the carb, pull the old air cleaner off, put the new one on, and hook up the ventilation hose.
The only legal alternative is the dual snorkel air cleaner that came on L69's, but many people have had trouble finding all of the parts for one.

The setup for a dual-snorkel air cleaner pops up in the classifieds every once in a while. You could just run the open element and change back to the stock air cleaner when inspection time comes.
lol, I would change it when it comes time but it is time. I have to take it in this saturday which is tomorrow. I have a current air cleaner on it right now but its not the right one. The holes are in competely different places. I'm just going to take it in tomorrow for a pre-test. The car still has 2001 tags on it because the person who I bought it off didn't get new tags on it.
All of the hoses hook up and everything, its just this one hose which I do believe is the oil blowout. I'm just going to give it a try and see what happens. At least this way I know whats wrong with it or what I need if it doesn't pass the pre-test.
