Carb/Intake selection?
Carb/Intake selection?
Hey I'm wondering what would be a good carb and intake for a 305? I don't want anything that's going to guzzle gas and give horsepower. The car it's going into is just going to be my daily driver and waxer, so I'm not doing any mods to the car aside from appearance. Just want something that will have good fuel economy (for carbed anyway). Keep in mind I'm looking for non cc carbs. Thanks.
What's the difference between vacuum and mechanical secondaries? Excuse my ignorance on carbs but what's a secondary? LOL Should I perhaps go out and buy a book "Carbs for Dummies" ? Some experienced words from someone would help. Thanks guys.

Secondaries are the other two back barrels on a 4 barrel carb. Vacuum secondaries open when load sees the need, they are good for autos and street cars. Mechanical secondaries open with throttle position and are best for manual cars or cars that are raced often. This is a poor explaination<-sp, but I think you can get the idea. You should read the sticky at the top of the page, it will explain things better that me.
BTW, Your friend is full of
. You will need to re-tune slightly when the seasons change, but you won't have to rebuild your carb.

Q-jet.
Best mix of economy, reliability, and power capability.

From the descripition you give, you probably just want a q-jet. They have small primaries(the 2 barrels you use during normal driving), and huge secondaries(the 2 barrels you use at wide open throttle). Intake, action + would be a good choice, or just a stock intake. An aftermarket igintion system can also help efficiency(mileage).

The stock aluminum L69 intake is a pretty good one for the usual street car RPM range (idle-6000 rpms)
I say "L69 intake" because i'm not sure if the LG4 had the same one. Probably did though.

In the US it did. Canadian LG4's apparently got cast iron (in most cases).
