Carb reccomendations for my application

Ok, I currently have an 85 T/A. I have a 350 w/ ported 416 heads and ported stock alum intake. I have comp cams xe268 cam. I have hooker long tubes and true duals w/ dynomax bullets. I have a 93 close ratio t56 w/ 2.97 first gear and 3.45 borg warner rear end.

I have a set of world products sportsman II's and a performer rpm intake that I will be porting once I get the time. the motor will probably stay like that for a while. I had origionally planned on just going with the computer controlled quadrajet and still might, but if I do will probably buy a remanufactured one. Mine runs pretty good, but it has some wear on it. I have also considered going with an aftermarket carb but want to keep as much fuel mileage as possible so havent decided.

After I had all of the above mentioned finnished I have been considering saving up and making it a 383 and maybe going up a size or 2 on the cam but that would be a while. If I was to do this would I be able to use the same carb or would I have to change at this point? I also plan to evenutally get a steeper set of gears maybe 3.73's or 4.10's.

I am kind of just going throug the car as I have the money so I am just trying to figure out what I should do when I get the heads and intake ready to go on.

I think a Holley 750 DP would do nicely, but if you're looking for good gas mileage you might go with a VS carb. The 750 will be plenty, even for the 383 in the future, you'll just have to jet it up some. I wouldn'tgo much bigger than the 274 cam unless it's going to be a strip car, the 284 is pretty big for the street (not to mention gas mileage goes way down). With the 274 I'd go with the 3.73 gears. 4.10's would be a bit much, besides with the 383 oyu have plenty of low end to pull the shorter gear.

So a 750 DP seems to be the consensus? How much difference in fuel mileage will I notice between a vacuum secondary carb and a dp? How much performance?

It wouldn't be a huge difference in mileage, but performance wise would be enough to notice. It won't launch as hard out of the hole with the VS carb, especially since you're running a manual.

So would the 4150 be the what you guys reccomend? I want to at least have the electric choke. Can you buy it with it or do you have to change it out? Would I be best off saving up and getting a new one or do you think that I could buy a used one and be fine?

The 4150 doesn't come with a choke. You'll probably want the 4779 or 3310 (I think it's 3310). Those come with a choke. As long as the carb isn't in bad shape I'd buy a used one. Rebuilding it isn't very hard, and while you're in there you can get some trick parts for it (Adjust-a-jet, buna gaskets, etc.)

I am pretty sure that the 3310 is a vs carb. I think its what is on my brothers car. I am going to look up the numbers you posted though. I thought that the 4150 had a manual choke at least?

DP/4150 carbs come with a manual choke but you can buy a Holley electric choke kit from Summit for about $40.

Sorry, I was thinking the 4150 HP ones, those don't have a choke. I don't know where the 3310 number came from, I must have been thinking of something else. The 4779 would be what you want.

Ben, DON"T buy a rebuilt Qjet. If you still want to use the ccQjet take yours to a carb shop, and have them do it. Most rebuilders ruin those Qjet in the process. They use generic and inferior parts, not intended for performance.
