running too rich

i have a 283 with about 250hp and a edelbrock 1406 carb on it. i got the carb brand new about a year ago. i put in rods and jets to make it about 6% leaner. it runs OK and dosn't foul plugs but it smokes a lot. at idle it dosn't smoke, its just when you get on the gas. do you think i should go leaner on the jets and rods? any ideas?

i don't know what the total advance is. i had to cut a new damper key slot because the old one ripped out, now its way off.

i've been messing with the timing tough and it dosn't do much. i put on a holley 600 and now it runs a little too lean. i'l probably leave that on and tune it up. it seems to run a little stronger with that on, and should do a lot better once its tuned up some.
