Swapping over from computer carb to straight carb
I want my 1986 305 4 barrel to have a 1405 Edlebrock carb instead.
The mission is to get:
A 79 Chevy distributor
An adapter plate
EGR relocation kit
K&N aircleaner
1405 carburator 700cfm
Here is a question though...
After bypassing the computer, will I have any chance in blazes to pass emmissions????
The only upgrade is the pipe between the cat and muffler is bumped up to 2.5 inch.It was damaged and I decided to go larger because eventually I am getting the 2.5 inch muffler and cat.So it does have the cat converter on.It passed emmissions with flying colors a few months ago.
Any information is appreciated

Dude, you know somebody's gonna come in here and ask, "Why change carbs?" So, I'll just do that for them. I can't answer your emissions question, but I'd suggest if you have strict inspections to just keep the cc carb and spend that money on something else. (not hating on your wishes man)

The reasons for swapping carbs is...
Believe it or not,the car only has 1350 miles on it.Its a 1986 that had all the fluids flushed and changed out.
But...the carb is varnished big time.
The TPS sensor is going out intermittenly.
The 02 sensor has no signal at all.
The car is hard to start in the morning.Hard excelleration is met with a huge power loss.I had it diagnosed earlier today, and they said it needs the carb cleaned, new TPS sensor, new seals, and a full tune up for guess how much??? $825-$850 they said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I asked around, noone thinks it is a fair price.
I am told it will be cheaper to swap the carb for one that isnt computer controlled.
I also seen a fuel injection kit with stand alone electronics which I may opt for.It is $750 for the kit,but not sure if I will gain or lose power from this kit.
Anyways, the carb swap is purely because it will cost more to fix the old one than get a new non computer driven carb.

1) Stict visual inspection? If the answer to my question is "yes", the answer to your question is "no".
2) Your tuning skills. If they are marginal, the answer to your question is "no". The $850 will suddenly look like a bargin.

How’s this for a plan?:
Buy a junkyard CCcarb core for $20-$30, some Torx wrenches, and a good Rochester book for $20. I like the one by Doug Roe.

Practice taking apart/reassembling the junk carb. Once you develop some carb skills and confidence, spend $70-$80 on a rebuild kit and new TPS. A new O2 sensor is $30-$40.
Some other good tools to have (or borrow) are 1” open-end wrench and 5/8” flare nut wrench for disconnection gas line, and O2 sensor socket.

I second the rebuild idea. If you have emissions, don't try and swap to a non CC carb. I can't remember where I seen them, but there were rebuilt CC carbs for about 400 bucks somewhere.

What are the other drivers reactions when you flip up the door panels
And the taillights are a good solution to tailgaters
And if they dont back off open up the whole hatch

I made a reply which I attached a new pic of the car,the forum said-pic to big...I hit <back>and all my text was gone...
I will make it the short version:
I will take the carb off, clean it and replace the TPS and 02 sensor.
Also the cap and rotor, and will clean the distributor.
I appreciate all the info...
My car was for sale on E-bay and still is on many sites<-make an offer.
I need to take a few new pics that will fit, they are a few megs, which wont fit on the forum.I just tried and it didnt work.
I can e-mail a pic of it in my garage with Arizona plates.
