Intake reccomendations

Im looking for a new intake. I have a 85 ta with a 350 in it. It was an LG4 but it died and I replaced it with the 350 bored .040 over. I am using the stock intake and stock exhaust - emissions and muffler. I want a short intake to go with the edlebrock 1406 carb I have. That way I can get rid of the spacer and my stock hood will work and I can ditch the fiberglass cowl hood. I want a decent one without egr, dual plane and as short as I can get. I plan on getting some headers later this year also but right now the intake so I can finish the bodywork and paint it.

What should I get that will fit my needs. I want my old hood back. What will give me the best performance/fit and isnt going to kill my wallet.

What cam do you have. Intake selection depends on powerband.

Two good options would be Edelbrock Performer or Performer RPM. Both are realtively inexpensive pieces that will increase performance and fit under the stock hood.

The Performer's suggested powerband is idle-5500 while the RPM is 1500-6500. For a few more dollars you can also get them in an "air-gap" design.

its just a stock 350. No hot cam or anything I dont even know what what the specs are on it. Just a plain jane cam. I am not going to race the car I just want a normal daily driver intake. If I do mod the engine a little I want it to be able to handle it. Im not talking 500 hp or anything just basic mods maybe a more aggresive cam, port/polish heads and the headers that are gonna go on later this year. This is the car I will be driving every day. A cam good from off idle to 5000 or 5500 is all I need. This isnt the best motor in the world I got it built cheap, the guy just gathered up parts and built it for me from what he had lying around his machine shop. Its .040 over and I think he just used oversized rings so this motor is never going to see high rpm I have never had it over 4500 and I have put about 6000 miles on it.

I want something with a low profile so I can put it on and the 1406 carb + the air cleaner and have it fit under the stock trans am hood. I have looked at the air gap but they would be too tall. I havent been able to find one of those drop base air cleaners that come off the carb and then drop to help with clearance. Everyone keeps telling me about them but nobody knows where the hell to get one. If you know where to get one of these air cleaners I need one bad to help me with clearance. The stock air cleaner housing didnt fit correctly on the edelbrock carb it, the opening at the bottom was too large and it didnt seal.

Any suggestions on everything is appreciated.

Dont just focus on Edelbrock intakes. Holley/Weiand makes good intakes as well. They generally have a larger powerband as well. I like the Weiand Stealth.

Intakes, I'd go with a Weiand Action+. The Stealth is good, but it's taylored towards the upper RPM end. The Performer is probably the low-price leader, though.

If you want a lower profile intake that makes power where you'll use it, go with a performer. You should be able to find one for about $110. The Performer EPS has the same powerband and is a little better intake.

The EPS is 1/10 taller than the performer and the Air-Gap is 3/10 taller.

The lowest (hi perf) air cleaner that really snugs around the carb and provides the most clearance is the on used on late 60's GM muscle cars. Search my past posts for the details and where to get one. {keyword : L-88}
You'll need an 3/8" plastic edelbrock carb horn spacer and a edelbrock carb "banjo" fuel inlet fitting for this aircleaner. Both are in the edelbrock catalog.
This air cleaner will allow more than enougn clearance for a Edelbrock Performer RPM Hi rise intake.
Other good choices are an edelbrock performer EPS
a Edelbrock Performer, a Weiand Stealth dual plane
ana Professional products "typhoon" dual plane high rise (very simular to the RPM manifold)

five7 I'll say it again you are the man... You can find any part any time anywhere. I looked all over for a drop air cleaner housing about a year ago. I checked all the online shops, junkyards, friends, auto parts/performance shops. I couldnt find anything. Its not that I mind the cowl hood I like it but the whole lift off thing sucks and it pretty much looks like hammered a$$.

Thx guys Ill take a look and try to make up my mind. I need something. I drive to school every day about 30 miles and on the highway when a truck passes me the opposite direction the fiberglass hood looks like its about to rip itself apart. I wish I would have gone with the bolt on instead of the lift off I would probably been happy with it. The wife complained about the xtra 150 though so now its a waste of all the money I spent on the hood in the first place. Im done listening to her about stuff. She has to get the cheapest of everything no matter how many advantages spending a little more up front can give.

Power plus makes an intake like the performer but cheaper. Its idel-5500 rpm or the "performance" one is 1000-6800 rpm. The street one cost about $95 and the performance one is about $124.

Summit carries the lower profile aircleaners. Magnum is one that you can get in different colors and is only 40 bucks.

Hope I could help...
