Accelerator Stuck!!!

First off, I am running a Holley 600 cfm e-choke on a stock LG69 305 with an MSD Distributor. Lately, my accelarator has been sticking. In other words, when I get on the gas, it does not get back up. I replace my accelerator pump, but that didn't help. What can I do to stop the throttle from sticking?

Have you checked the throttle cable for binding?

Try unhooking the cable from the linkage, and try the linkage to see if it sticks, and try the cable as well. Sometimes the linkage can get gummed up.

Are the return springs on the carb still intact?

Don't do that... that will pick up dirt and grit really quickly and make the problem worse.

First, check everything in the linkage and make sure nothing is binding. After that, see if there is anything (like a wire or something) that is nearby that some part of the linkage could get jammed up on.

Lastly, if there is nothing else that seems to be causing the problem, try lubing the linkage, but not with something like grease or vaseline. Use a dry lubricant (graphite maybe?) because that will not pick up dirt like a sticky lube like grease or vaseline will.

Hmm..My dad has same problem.. he has HRS too..Still not fixed ...I think its linkage..somehting is too tight so it cant retract..or its gumming up...Thats my guess.

Who, may I ask, told you to do this?

I replaced the accelerator pump because it was already leaking fuel. I just put that info on there in case someone suggested to do that. I didn't really think the two problems were related.

heres what i do:

first disconnect the cable from the carb... the weight of the gas pedal should make it want to pull in.... pull the cable in and out.. it should move freely with no binding.. you should actually be able to feel the pedal moving, thru the cable.

if its not totally smooth, run over to your local motorcycle shop and get a can of CABLE LUBE.(i reccomend anyplace OTHER then a harley shop because, well harley places overcharge)
yea, they do make a product just for this.

under the dash you'll see how the cable connects to the pedal, it just clips in.. pull it off and put a ziplock bag around the cable. a wrap of tape will hold it on. this is so you dont get drips on your carpet, so make sure it holds good and has room for the lube.

now following the directions on the can, spray it down the cable. the lube should carry any dirt and grit out, and smooth it up alot.

if grit remains, then you just need a new cable. no way around it.
otherwise, just put it back on and you're set to move to the next part.

once the cable is fine, check your return spring.
from the carb/throttlebody pull the lever and open it fully. it should open smoothly. without binding. when you let go, it should snap shut.

if it doesnt snap shut quickly and fully, slowly open it and close it until you find where its binding...
if its not binding, and its just lack of spring pressure, replace your throttle return springs.

do all that, and you should have a nice smooth throttle.

also, make sure the linkage isnt interfereing with the aircleaner. if it sits too low it may bind up against that.

spray some wd-40 into the throttle pulley thing. Linkage Im guessing is what these guys are saying. Anyway. It happened to me. Almost got into an accident. The brakes werent enough to hold the car. Does it fix it if u floor it for a quick second. On my old t/a it used to fix it that way. but in slow moving traffic its not a good idea. Anyway. Spray some lube in there and hope it works.

make sure there is a tiny bit of free play in the accelerater pump linkage when at WOT. also install some good throttle return springs. If i had my digital camera right now i'd snap a pic of how i have my return sprngs, so the best i can do right now is with paint.(friday i can get some real pics for you.) My throttle is nice and stiff, but i don't have to worry about it sticking open.

one of the intake manifold bolts. I can snap some real pics tonight. With the springs that way it will help against uneven throttle shaft wear.

yeah i had the same problem a few months back. i had some work done at a shop, and they put on a new throttle body gasket when they reassembled it. turns out the lazy *******s didn't have the exact part for my year car, so they used a different gasket that was very similar.

30 seconds away from the shop, the throttle gets stuck at over 3/4 throttle. layin on the brakes as hard as i can push, barely slowing it down at all. going like 60 around cars going 40 mph cause my car wanted to keep accelerating. finally i started thinking calmly, shut the car off, shifted into neutral, and coasted into a gas station.

needless to say, i was HIGHLY pissed off at the shop that did the work. the mismatched TB gasket had a slight edge sticking out that the throttle cable caught on....needless to say, got my money back for my near death experience and i'm never going near the shop again.

ALL that to say what everybody else is saying....w/ the engine off, fiddle with the throttle cable and make sure there is nothing in the way that it could possible catch on. you don't want it screwing up again, it's scary as hell to not be able to slow your car down...

edit: lol didnt even notice this was the carb board...oh well, you don't have a TB, but throttle cable stuff is similar enough

Here is a picture of my thorttle setup. Mine was also binding when there plastic sheath of the throttle cable meets up with the end of the cable(the metal piece that goes over the throttle stud).
So i pulled the plastic piece off of that metal tab, and it fixed the problem.
