Carbed Lt1?

Posted in Engine swap, probably wrong place sorry , so here it is too :

hey guys, i'm havin troubles researching lt1's with carbs.. right now i want to switch from fuel injection to carb because i put a gen II lt1 inside my 1983 camaro, and i really do not want to mess with wiring and splicing etc. i was told i can get a intake for the lt1 so i can use the carb, and the distributor that goes in the back of the intake rather than this optispark. I actually would rather have a carb anyway, is this possible? Or will i ruin my motor ? Reason i am curious if i can harm my motor is because i know on the newer ecu theres a knock sensor, but on my old one i dont know much about it.. my plan now was to use my old harness and old computer and just slap a carb on and go. Is there anything i need to know as to what else i would have to do as far as changing over?

Seems like a waste of a perfectly good LT1 block....you could get the same results...probably cheaper with a standard SBC block. yes it can be done, you will lose all the advantages of EFI (including less fuel milage and power) but it will work just fine. LT1 block has the provisions for a distributor in the rear of the block just like a Gen1 block.

will i really lose that much power? damn.. i just dont know how to do all that wire harness stuff, because putting the gen 2 motor in the 83 i guess i need to do some splicing and stuff, no idea on how to do that stuff, also seems that my harness may be imcomplete i dont see any wires that would go to the battery :/

damn. damn. now i gotta think =/

Edelbrock makes the intake you are looking for. And contrary to what StealthElephant claims, power will not suffer. In fact, with the right sized carb, you might actually see a power increase. All the OTHER fuel injection related things will suffer though, like cold starts, fuel mileage, and emissions. But definately not power.

my friend owns the Black Z 28 that was in the CHP ( chevy high performance) old VS new comparison.

His 396 LT-1 made 525 HP at 6200 with the dual plane and a carb. He did this for dynoing only, now it has the stock intake back on it. Same power according to track #'s.

I can get you his e-mail address if you want. The dual plane is new and he'd probably get rid of it.

GM also makes an intake for this.

I just don't really see any reason to do it. You get exactly the same results out of a regular 350 and it would cost about 1/3 of what doing up the LT1 would cost.

reversed cooling+decreased chamber temps=more timing and POWER...did you know that the stock LT1 has 38 degress total timing and its all in by 2,400 rpm?...due to the reverse cooling (and sequential fire for EFI) the timing can be far more aggressive...im running a carbed LT4 motor and i couldnt beleive how much timing it liked...

im using the GMPP intake and have no complaints..

Combos VERY similar to mine have put down 375hp (425 crank or so) and i have a little more then 3,000 into EVERYTHING....Nuts bolts odds n ends..EVERYTHING.....

Thats why i went with an LT1...mainly the reverse cooling, and the motor dont give 2 shats what induction system is on top....

maybe in a couple years ill waste an LS1 with a carbed intake
