mechanical secondaries w/ auto?

i know its not a good idea....but why?

can it be made to work?

i just converted my car back to a pro-built auto trans, and now its doesnt want to run worth a crap, when its supposed to downshift the engine backfires and wants to stall. i have a 6210 carb, that is modified, probably more of a drag carb now, but i've never had a problem with it fouling plugs at all.
anything i can do to make the car run better

When the RPMs drop during a shift at WOT, flow through the secondaries drops considerably and makes the car go lean until secondary airflow picks up again. If your converter stalls high enough this might not be such a big problem.

What mods were done to make a 6210 drag only?

I don't see why it would be a bad thing.

Works fine, as long as the driver doesn't stomp it to the floor.

What it does shifting isn't near as much of an issue, as what it does off the line.

I've run 6210s on auto cars for years; in fact, I've even used one sometimes on my Land Yacht (74 Caprice convertible 454). Not a problem, as long as the driver knows how to drive it.

Sounds to me like in your case, the secondaries aren't feeding any fuel, or at least, not enough. Check their fuel level.

the car is having serious problems yet.....

the car goes extremly lean at anything more then 1/3 throttle. but yet it idles just on the rich side. also for some reason the engine is only making 4" of vacuum, when i used to have 14. could this be my whole problem?

i havnt checked the fuel level for the secondaries yet, but now that i could drive the car for a few more minutes, the car goes way lean before the secondaries even open. could i be right when im thinking that the distributor isnt getting enough vacuum to advance the timing?

im about ready to park the car until the new engine with FI is done this winter

i dont think that it is a leak, normally with a leak the car runs rough and/or stalls. the car will set and idle all day long though, and just doesnt have any power, doesnt miss or anything.

Go over the list of things that have been done between the time it ran okay and when it started misbehaving.

Only thing I can figure out from what you said is you put in an automatic transmission. That of itself would not lower vacuum to 4". Something else must have happened.

my 6210 has only given me a problem once and that was due to low fuel pressure. Like rb said. If you just stomp the hell out of the pedal you wont get the same reaction as a steady press down.
