98 4th gen 6 to pre 93 8

Well as stated in the topic i got a 98 6 with a 5sp, i just got the ok to sell my car since ill be 18 soon and wanted to get a third gen v8. First off i have considered getting a vert but to my dismay they only come in 305's. i have thought of the change over to a 350 and carb. My cars worth about 5k and ive got 1k saved so about 5.5k to work with including purchasing the car. I am almost witouth a doubt going carb due to my severe hate for computers and love the flexibility i can get from a carb. so i am up to any suggestions, my goal would be gettin a 350-400 hp daily driver and i dont care too much about the milage as long as freeway is about 15. o and if at all possible id like to get a t-56 in there, but that would be a bonus, otherwise a 700-r4

Car: 82 Berlinetta/57 Bel Air
Engine: L92/LQ4 (both w/4" stroke)
Transmission: 4L80E/4L80E
Axle/Gears: 12B-3.73/9"-3.89
3rd gen 350's only came with automatics. If it came with a manual tranny, it had a 305 or smaller.

All 3rd gens sold in the USA had computer control induction/ignition.

Computer control is the best way to get performance with economy. The flexibility afforded by programmable EFI trumps non-feedback carbs by a long shot. Performance parts are a lot less expensive for carbs than for EFI, but you pay that back with reduced economy.

i kno it gets worse milage but, from what ive read and researched, its much easier to modify a carb rather than a computerized engine, personally after my v6 im very sick of them and would much rather have a carbed motor.

i have considered a 383 shortblock and puttin it in under the stock heads and intake off of say a 350 post 86. then converting to carb, would i not achieve more power through the carb rahter than the computerized one, leaving the milage out?

For the same money, yes.

What, if any, emissions inspection/testing do you have to go through? That's really the most important factor for a street-driven car.

I think ive pretty much made up my mind. I belive im going to go with the 383 carb swap, not sure what the host is gonna be but most likely it will be TPI.

i hoping to achive around 400 hp

any thoughts on this would be appreicated. so far ive listed that i will need

1. carb
2. intake mani
3. HEI dis
4.3 port regulator (could someone explain this)
5. 383 short block

this is all i can think of at the moment im pretty sure ill need new heads if im not mistaken but im clueless as what to be lookin for with a 383, plz if you have any exp lay it on me

If you are looking for a solid 400 hp I would add heads to that list too. The three port regulator is regulate your in tank fuel pump down to a pressure that is usable by the carb, like 4-6 psi.

The stock heads are going to be a hinderance. The more displacement you add to the shortblock, the more of a flow issue it will become. They will need some good work to work well with a 383. I would recommend something a little better than L98 heads.
