If the engine won't start and its in good condition the things that will keep it from starting are: air, fuel, and spark. First check ignition you may have a simple problem there. Then check and make sure you have your fuel lines hooked up correctly and that the fuel pump is working. Also make sure you're not flooding the engine by tapping the gas too much at start up. Which reminds me, to engage the choke you need to pump the gas to the floor one time, one time only! See if any of that helps. Its probably ignition though, you'll be able to tell as soon as you pull one of the plugs. Good luck, let me know if it doesn't work out I can help you out some more.

well i tried to get the choke to engage it still wont start there is a fuel line thats on the front of the carb and one on the back i put the line coming in on the front and the one on the back is going to a canister on the front drivers side on the can it says tank with a ruber hose that appears to go back to the tank and yes the pump works it shoots gas about a foot or so

Alright, it sounds like you have everything hooked up right but the distributor. You have two options:
1) Find TDC when #1 cylinder is on compression stroke and mark on balancer indicates TDC. Put distributor in with rotor pointing toward #1 plug connection.
2) I think you've got the distributor 180 out, so put it in the opposite way you have it.
You can do it either way, up to you but I'm sure its timing because its backfiring out the carb.

Also check that the plug wires are going to the right place.
I've done that enough times to always check it when I've replaced a distributor and have a no start, or poor running engine.

How did you go about putting the '85 computer & sensors in the '88? You haven't said anything about that.

You said it came from an '85 Camaro, which from the factory would be a Quadrajet. Unless that car was delivered in Canada, it wouldn't have a mechanical carb. So, you should have been more specific.
Now, what distributor are you using?
