weird edelbrock problem
So I just finished getting evrything all put together and its time to start my motor. I have a brand new edelbrock 600 w/ manual choke. I can get the engine to start, but its really rich, and it will only idle about 5 seconds before the secondaries open up and flood the engine out completely!! And then for the next 10 seconds or so after its off, gas pours out of the top of the carb and just pools up inside the throttle blade area. I am using a Carter electric fuel pump @ 6psi, and I checked to make sure that is was in fact at 6psi.
On a side note, when I first got the engine together, I had the distributer in backwards and accidentally started a small fire on the top of the carb , but I put it out pretty quick. Could this be related?

had the same problem with my holley. i had some very old brass floats in it and they had a leak. so they are soaked with fuel and resting on the bottom of the fuel bowl.
replaced them with nitrophyl floats and everything is fine

this is hard to believe.
try this test,
from a gas can 9 or so feet higher than the carb,
run gas to the carb by gravity.
is the carb flooded and leaking gas?,
or are the needles holding back the flow?

Take the top of the carb off, remove the floats and shake them. If you can hear gas sloshing around inside, then they're leaking. If that was the case, considering that you have a brand new carb, I'd be trying to get warranty replacement before I'd be looking for hard-to-find third-party replacement floats.

if they are leaking, maybe a cheaper solution is to solder the brass ones. just make sure they are free of gas
did that to mine till i got nitrophyl floats.

I took them out and shook them, and they were empty. The only other thing I can think of is maybe because I mounted my electric fuel pump off to the side in the engine bay instead of by the fuel tank. I just couldn't find ony good space back there, and all the fuel lines were so rusty I didn't want to mess with them. I know that its at exactly 6psi, but would it matter with it almost being a puller pump instead of pushing?

it definitely has to do with the needles and seat area of the carb... either they are weak and need replaced, adjusted, or they are being fed to much preassure
