high idol most of the time

ok i have a 1984 t/a recently got rid of the q-jet, and put on a edelbrock 600 cfm electric choke carb. when i start it up it will start fine and go its normal idol. (600 rpms). after i start to drive it and just sit at a light or whatever then the idol will go upto 2100-2200 rpms unless i gas it a littlebit then it will return back down to idol. it always does it and will always return back to 2100-2200 rpms after start to drive again till i gas it a little at the light or just parked getting ready to turn it off. can anybody help im sure this isnt helping my gas mileage any.

It sounds like a problem with the choke. Make sure you are getting proper voltage to the choke. Also, you replaced the distributor when you swapped carbs, right?

If you have a non-cc carb, you need a non-cc distributor. The cc distributor is made to work with the sensors that come with the q-jet carburetor system. I had the same problem and ended up having to replace the distributor.

Either the throttle plates are sticking a bit of slop in the primary shaft. Clean up the bores & plates, then try tightening up on your return spring some. After using the carb cleaner, use some WD40 or a little motor oil to re-lube the bores.
