Welcome aboard.

Cam, exhaust - must do's. The factory carb is good for well over 400 HP, and you aren't going to get close to that with a 305 until you do a lot, lot more, and basically make it unstreetable. However, you can sort of justify a double pumper with a 5-speed manual. I'd keep it to 600 CFM, though, on a 305.

There's a 305 thread I posted in the FAQ forum. Check that out.

thank you for the timely reply..im sitting here bitting my nails wondering if i should just walk up and slap him the face with the money i already took it out of my account...well i think i will stick with a 600 carb but the thing is the carb on this something stick and it will flood out..and it is a well words can not express how hard it is getting her going again....so i think i will get a holley 600 single pumper....the only thing i ask of this car cause i hade a drag spec lt-1 for a while...is to take down a 88 5.0 stang that is all i ask cause my friend she would never let me live it down yes she not sexiest but you can understand a mans pride....and again any idea on how much hp im hoping for 250 at least..

Rebuild the carb, then. You're asking for more expense than results replacing it. You won't gain any power to help you beat a Stang by putting on a Holley.

Just curious why you say single pumper. A vacuum secondary carb on a 5-speed is not the best of ideas. If you don't go with a double pumper, stick with the stock carb and save your money for other things.

FWIW, when I still had the 305, with cam, ported heads, exhaust, dual snorkel air cleaner and GMPP intake manifold, the rear wheel horsepower calculated out to about 235, based on drag strip performance (never got it on a dyno). With the 350, it comes out to about 290.

Careful, there, good ol' Dad may have saved you from more than you'll ever know.

Having lost my father a week before I bought my Camaro, I can tell you there is a big empty spot every time I do something with it and can't talk to him about it. Don't give up, and be thankful you have someone there to be along side you in this process.

(Although I would encourage him to give up the habit. No good can come of that.)
