15th Anniv. TA, need some add power advice?
Everything is original and stock! I want to keep it that way mostly, but was curious if there were any small mods I can do to increase some HP and give it a little more pep!
48,200 original miles.
A few things I know I'm doing!
No exhaust inspection here, so I'm removing the cat(keeping it) and taking the belt off the smog pump! I'm leaving everything else on, so it can be easily put back! Also, i'm putting in a hurst shifter, I always loved that shifter on my old 84 TA!
I already have a K&N filter!
It has a 5-speed tranny, 3.73 gears, and of course 305 HO with quadrajet, also has a flowmaster
I was thinking about a PROM chip of some kind, but more I read, the less I believe they work?
Any other small mods I can or any ideas or advice
Thanks!

There really aren't any little things. Chips don't help L69's much (they don't do that much - primary mixture and ignition curves). Taking the A.I.R. belt off will do nothing with the possible exception of causing the pump the seize up. When you say "K&N filter", do you mean a filter element in the original air cleaner housing, or a complete open element unit? If the latter, put the original air cleaner housing back on.
Outside of that, you're looking at headers, cam upgrade, head porting/larger valves, and possibly intake manifold to make any further improvements.

Thanks, it still has the snorkel element, just the KN filter on the inside!
I know taking the belt off will not help, but since I'm disposing of the cat, I figured its of no use anymore, for now? Didn't know them things would seize up if they are not turning?
Anyway, give me some ideas on intake, heads, cam, etc..........can I change the intake and make some nice improvements? I just have to make sure its not a high rise, since my snorkel is there? Not trying to get super HP, just some simple to change things!
Going to try and stay away from headers and keep the stock manifolds on, headers are a pain on them vehicles!
Also, I would like to convert the AC over to the new stuff, any ideas where I post about that or is it pretty simple?
Thanks for the reply

What happens to the A.I.R. pump is without any flow, exhaust gets by the check valves and cruds up the pump. Took less than a week to do it to mine. In a perfect world the check valves would prevent it, but it isn't a perfect world.
Headers aren't that bad, and are well worth it. You have about the best SBC exhaust manifolds the factory offered, certainly on our cars, but they still pale against even the least of the aftermarket headers out there. Any other changes you make will be hampered by the stock manifolds. Some people take a die grinder to them, but there's only so much you can do.
A Comp XE262 would be a nice choice. You may get by with an XE268, even. I used a Crane Compucam 2050 with mine, it worked fine.
Intake manifold, you can go with a Weiand Action+, Edelbrock Performer, GMPP EGR q-jet (side-by-side pictures, there isn't much difference between those last two), or step up to an Edelbrock Performer RPM. You shouldn't have any hood clearance problems with any of those as long as you don't use any spacers or adapters (shouldn't be a problem, all of those manifolds are available in spreadbore versions).
Do a search on the Tech forum on porting. The heads you have are the same as the ones most talked about. You should assume valve spring replacement is required. Larger (1.94") intake valves typically help as well. Something should be done about the rocker arm studs - the factory press-in jobs are known to pull out. Some guys drill the boss and stick a roll pin into the stud, others have the studs removed and the bosses machined and tapped for screw-in. I know a machinist who says all you need to do is oven bake the heads (a carefully controlled process) and they'll never pull out on their own. Personally, I went with World Products heads and did my own porting on them.
All of this is discussed in a thread on the FAQ forum about the differences between 305's and performance mods to them.

Thanks, i'll check it out!
Also, I replaced the fuel filter in my quadrajet, the parts clerk gave me a filter that is twice as long as the one I took out???
Is there 2 different kinds, and which should I use??

Can't sell, waited too long to fine one
Also, I see the short fuel filter and long fuel filter both fit, so I guess it don't matter?
I'll run it and see which one is the best

If the filter & nut don't hit the spring when installing them, the short filter is too short and isn't going to filter the fuel.
My guess would be you need the long filter (like mine does).

About the A/C. Switching over is expensive and a waste. One thing is it takes a diffrent type of oil. Also, the compressor needs to be changed. If you just drop in 134a you will not have a/c very long. Also if the A/C is not working you have a leak which needs to be addressed. R22 does not wear out. There is a product that most service stations will not tell you about. It is a drop in replacement for R12 called hot shot or 414a. They also make a product that will seal small holes. It cost 20 for a can of hot shot or 800.00 to convert over. I guess you can figure out why the shops dont talk about 414.
