New Car blues

Hey Guys

Just picked up an 84 firebird, bone stock 6cylinder. I have a bit of a problem and this may be the best place to ask it.

Car hasnt been run in about a year at least. The throttle was very very stiff, so I sprayed some WD40 on the linkage. Now it idles ridiculously high. To the point where putting it from Neutral to drive I chirp the tires, and I can also drive down the street and it will shift gears without me ever touching the gas.

Another look under the hood and I realize that If I take the linkage assembly and push it forward, it drops the idle down but it wont stay there. The speed screws are not touching it in anyway so I cant adjust it that way. The car also diesels when I shut it off

What should I do? Im leaning towards replacing the throttle return spring as a starter but wanted to know if anyone else has any thoughts.

What about the dieseling?

The fast idling can be causing the dieseling. Cant hurt to try a new return spring! Also check the whole throttle cable to be sure it inst binding anywhere. Lubricate all pivot points
