My carb is evil...HELP!!!
Alright I just switched from TPI to carb some i'm new at most of this, so dont' drop to many techincal words on me...thanks
I got a 650 holley DP on my 1988 350. I just rebuild the block it has ported heads a high rise intake, with a .465/.480 cam.
I have an intake fuel pump that I hot wired on a switch so I can turn it off and on.
Now, I was tuning my carb, (at least I like to think I was) and the when I give it gas it chokes for a second and then revs up, the engine just seems to die it I try to adjust the mixture needles at all, and doesn't do anything to the trottle respond...Thats problem #1...what do i do to correct that problem.
Problem #2 is a little werid, at least for me. I was tuning the carb and when I got so POed at it (becuase of problem number 1) I went to go turn the car off, but the engine had something else in mind, and didn't want to turn off. So with the keys in my hand I when to go turn off the fuel pump (which is again electric)...the engnie still ran, and not only did it run, I drove it around the block. and I could get on the gas if I wanted to. The only way for me to turn the engine off is to close the choke.....What could cause this b/c this is really really werid,
PLEASE HELP ME...
ITS SO NICE OUTSIDE I WANT TO GO DRIVING!!!!! HAAAAAA!!!!
thanks in advance

first make sure that the timing is correct and start with 1 1/2-2 turns out at the idle mixture screws. you can adjust it later with a vacuum gauge. the bog when opening the throttle could be that you need more pumpshot. what size squirters and pump cams do you've got in it? also make sure that the check needles (tiny needles under the screw for the squirters) are in place...
for the second problem... maybe a problem with the ignition switch? you can turn the fuel pump off and drive the car around for some time because you still got fuel in the bowls.
hope that helps a bit

oh and by the way its just a stock 650 carb I have no idea what pumper shot or anything thats in it. It was fine, but it seemed like it was getting way to much gas you could see gas flowing down the carb, now when i look down it there is nothing going down the barrels

Look on the bottom side front of the carb, check and see if there is a larger than normal clearance between the accel pump, it will be the arm that runs under the carb and the thing with the little springy thing on it.....lol. Sound like your not getting enough of a pump shot as you cut in on your throttle. If there is more than about 5to10 thous. between the two then you neet to thighten it up. You can also with the car off by hand tip in the throttle about 1/8 way in and look and see if your getting a pump shot to your primary, see the gentelmans photo above to see fuel shoot out of the squirter. if not close the gap on the accel pump until you stop the hesitation. Also check your float level fist to make sure your not to low. Then when you get that out you can work on getting you squirter size right.

31 should be ok. have you adjusted the accelerator pump arm? is it better now?
hook up the gauge to full manifold vacuum. under the primary fuel bowl.

I haven't looked at it yet, It's been raining out side like every second of my free time, Tomarrow looks good...
I solved my problem with the engine to keep running...yea I guess some of my wires where touching on the dash, I re-wired some, and it turns off now...
I'll try the vaccum thing/accel pump tomarrow thanks again guys
