i have a 91 rs with 350 tbi and 700r4 and i was wandering wich would be better tbi or carb. my only problem is im trying to get more horespower and i already have a carb (holly 750 doublepumper but no intake) or should instead of getting an intake for the carb buy a hop up throttle body and an intake should i splurge for the throttle boby or the carb

 

I don't know. I'd run whichever you prefer. But you'll be spending more money than you think on the TBI setup, because the factory TBI unit probably won't get you where you want to go.

Me, I prefer carb, because I can't stand dealing with balky ECMs. But that's personal opinion.

I aswell would go carb, much easier to obtain HP than a tbi, tbi just didn't make very much sense to me. However, changing over to carb may serve just as much as a headache as getting HP out of your tbi. Depending on how much power you're looking for, you could always install a spacer between your tbi and manifold, install a rougher cam and reprogram the ecm to get atleast above 250 hp. You're main lose is having a 305 Ci block. I wouldn't expect more from it. Going carb will grant more options in achieving hp, however the clean up of all the ecm wiring and redirecting of the vacuum and emmisions control isn't worth it.

 

Are you sure it's a 350 TBI (LO5)? If so, I'd definitely spring for a Weiand "Stealth" intake (there pretty cheap, and work very well). I wouldn't bother with the 750 double pumper, unless you're planning on running an aggressive camshaft in you're near future. A Stealth intake with a non-cc quadrajet, and you'll be ripping some asphalt in no time...

I don't see problems for tbi until you
start having issues with the injectors

ok, so the car -305 had tbi, and you swapped in a 350
with tbi? if yes, you should consider keeping tbi.

btw, what cam is in the 350?

 

thanks the 350 is stock but fresh and yes i do know someone that can tune but there a** holes should i deal with them or get the carb and yaeh there that bad

 

Get a carb. TBI is a step in the wrong direction. There is no real right way to make HP with a TBI other than getting the largest injectors you can, which still are not all that large compared to the lb/hr rate you can get with 8 properly sized injectors. Then you end up cranking the TBI fuel pressure up to 2 or 3 times what the factory designed and having to burn chips to try to get it to idle right.

 

I beg to differ, GM ran 32 PSI fuel pressure on the last 454 TBI trucks with two small 45 lb/hr injectors. At 32 PSI they were equivalent to 73 lb/hr each. I have run 45/55/61/and 68 lb/hr injectors at 32-35 PSI with no problems. Chip tuning is not that hard to learn. I have pulled 301 RWHP @ 6,500 out of a TBI 305 with 61 lb/hr injectors and was not out of injector, I was out of engine!

while you have the chance.
There is no substitute for a good cam.

do a search, you can find out the
issues with going to carb.
you need to think about
. the carb to tranny cable
. what to do with the distributor
.the carb needs a low pressure regulator
. probably other stuff

 

i would stick to the tbi since it is already there. do as much as you can with bolt ons and tricks then move on to changing the prom.

Dart 215s on my 350 TBI. First startup and the .BIN was a total guess as to what the heads would do with the VE/Spark tables. I have it running much better after a little tuning.
