I'm not familiar with that regulator - need more details. Does it have a return port, or does it dead-head the supply to control pressure?

You mention stock pump...what stock pump are you running?
Also 1-2lbs of pressure seems low to me...I run a Carter mech. pump flowing into a Holley 650 and it reads between 5-6.

What type of guage are you using/basing your FP off of?? Is the car running good right now at WOT even though guage is only reading 1-2psi?? I will tell you for a fact if you only have 1-2 psi you WILL kill the engine from lack of fuel since 1-2 psi is not nearly enough to support an engine at speed and is barely enough at idle.
Have to assume your using the typical 1.5" non OR liquid filled Holley FP guage or knock off guage and all of these guages ate ambient temp sensative, meaning soon as it gets warm your readings can be anywhere from 0-burying the guage....everybody I hang with has been here done that.

So, if you "figured out" your problem by blocking off the return, your pump will be dying shortly. You either need to get a different regulator, or orifice the return such that you maintain 6 psi under max demand. Either way, you've got to have a return set up or you'll burn out the pump.

yeah i ended up gettin a fitting for the return and brazed it up and then cut a 16th inch hole in it so it lets some fuel but not all of it back to the return
