L88 base - how much drop?
Hey guys, just a question...
Right now I have an open 14x3 air cleaner with a 1.25" dropped base on top of my Holley. Hood clearance with this is so tight right now that I can't even use a wingnut on my air cleaner stud anymore, I have to use a regular nut
Anyway, I keep hearing about the L88 air cleaner base being a propular choice for you guys with really tight fitting motors? How much of a drop does this base provide? Anything better than what I have now?

I am not using the L88 base but I am using a Pro Flow 14x3 cleaner with a 1 1/2 in drop on the base and I am able to use a wing nut on top with no problems.

Adam come over today and try my drop base. I fit a 3" filter on my air gap. I use a bolt thought to hold it in rather than a stud and nut.

Switching to the GM "L-88" base from a typical generic Performance drop base like the Moroso base will get you about another inch of additional clearance.
On a holley you have to remove the choke horn and shorten the bowl vent stacks some. You may have to rework your throttle linkage bracket a bit. You can trim a Flat on the back of the base to clear a HEI cap too.
Here is the thread that has my pics showing the difference in base height Moroso VS GM L-88
Just measured the Moroso base. it is a 1.5" drop.

Well, I have an RPM air gap now, with a VS 4160 Holley. It will be changed for a Holley 4150 (4777) whenever that gets here, and it could be modified if necessary. Why would the linkages need trimmed? This air cleaner was designed for the Holley carbs the factory used, no?

Also... would the choke horn need removed completely? Or just shaved down some?

The throttle linkage is not the issue. The bracket is, mmay need to be lowered to clear the lower base.
The choke horn will need to be removed as the lid will sit that much closer to the top of the carb. The factory OEM carbs of the day had down leg boosters and a lower choke horn.
If you look at the pics in the thread you'll see.
The choke horns on Edelbrocks and Qjets are not as high as the aftermarket holleys are like your planned 4777.
