i've been a fighting a hesation/stalling probleming for awhile.been through the timing,leaks,igntion,valves.after trying a few things today the car wouldn't stay running like it was out of gas.i pulled the floats off and the bowls were about empty.so i had my wife crank the motor over while i held the fuel line in a cup (pre fuel filter)and nothing came out.so i took the line off before the pump where the oem line comes from the tank and had her crank it over.it sucked then pushed (it sucked more than it pushed).at my work we deal with diaphragm pumps alot 1" 2" and 3" and push pull on the suction end is bad but i'm not 100% sure about fuel pumps.

Also i don't know if this has anything to do with the pump but i have a strong gas odor in the oil (blown diaphragm leaking gas into the pushrod???)

now if that's the problem should i rebuiled my edelbrock pump at around $50 for the rebuild kit,buy another pump or put the stock one back on and run it like that (i have the stainless steel line kit with the inline filter for the edelbrock set up as i went with set up hoping to have more fuel demaneds by now,but i don't ) thanks in advance

 

do you have a regulator? if not the engine could be flooding and washing passed the rings and into the oil, do you have a filter? is it clogged? if you are cranking the engine and there is no fuel coming out of the line there is definitly something wrong with the pump, i would imagine that it is possible for the pump to be leaking into the fuel pushrod hole and into the oil. is the car carberated? i had hessitation/ occasional stalling problem with mine when i installed a holley pump with no return line. just changed back the other day and it seemed to fix things.

Fuel delivery problems and fuel in the oil are two pretty strong indications of a bad mechanical pump.

 

well sat. was a wash out.sun.pulled a double and mon. woke up hurting and went to back to work for 6 more (got to love double and triple time).I found the stock fuel pump was able to push it in and it sucked in more with a half stroke than the edel. pump so i'm hopefull on that .just have to get a an' fitting barb,if they make them and some rubber hose.
seeing how nobody else has seemed to post something like this i'll keep you updated(don't know when i'll get to the car working 12's and wedding to go on sat,and sun. will be to recover from sat)

 

i'd just buy a new edelbrock pump and call it a day, IIRC they're right around $50 for a new one. No sense in running rubber lines and buying fittings for a stock used pump. Make sure you buy the 7psi no regulator required mech. pump and remember to change your oil since it's fuel soaked.

yeah but i had to put a bottom mount kit on it so i'm wondering if i screwed it up then.

ahha....why yes, good catch on my error. Too many parts have been ordered lately and moved through the shop--too much stuff on my mind makes me slip up sometimes as well.
