electrics must mount near the tank as close as possible. the other option is to leave the sock there and setup the gas tank like a carb car and mount a mechanical fuel pump on the engine instead.

Yep like he said, most electric fuel pumps are "push". They must push gas not suck. I have a Holley Red electric pump. Works well. I think it was like 100 bucks.

mount it near the gas tank somewhere. drop the line and mount it on the spare tire well, the area on the other side where the rear storage box is, the rear main well, the frame near the LCAs, etc etc

I mounted mine where there is a rubber hose by the gas tank. The lines coming out of the tank are metal and then there is a rubber hose about 8 or 9 inches long and then metal lines again up to the front of the car. I put it there. You should try to mount it staight up and down if possible. Remember, when you break the line gas will come spilling out.

I did end up buying another red pump and it does not leak, works great.

No. Def not what you need to do.
What regulator are you running? Is it a return style. Sounds like you have a return style regulator and no retun line maybe....
Once we know the reg. then it will start to make sence.

No; you should be able to turn the pump on and then start you car. Sounds like you have a carb problem. The Holley Red pump does not require the use of a regulator. I have mine running a single feed line with no return line. Idealy, you should run a return line if possible, as it will reduce the stress on the pump, prolonging its life. I'm not super knowledgeable with carbuerators yet, but here is what should be happening, I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The pump should send a bunch of fuel up to the carb in which it should spill into the bowls. From there the bowl should be filled up to the level you have your floats set at. When you give it gas that fuel is then squirted out and mixed with air and sent to the cylindars. I'm not sure how you could be getting fuel in the cylindars with out giving it gas? Maybe a leak somewhere? I'd post over in the Carbuerators form, they'd prolly know best.
