Choke Problem?

I put a new stock carb on my car (84 camaro, cc q-jet), and in the process, broke the bottom plastic part of the wire that slips on the spade of the electric choke. my moms b/f took it off and slid a terminal on it and put it on, and my car is hella hard to start in the mornings and after sitting awhile, when cold. it also idles shitty (rpms rise and fall rise and fall) until it gets to WOT, im pretty much sure its the choke, but shouldnt the terminal do its job? its just a connector.. so wtf? lol do i really need the stock cable? should i get cut one off a car in the yard and splice them together? the choke shouldnt be bad, its a brand new carb, and yes the choke light is on whenever i turn the key.

also, it idles at 3 g's right when i start it when completely cold, 2 1/2 after 20 seconds or so, and at like 1500 in gear until complete WOT, then like 1250, do i need to adjust my fast idle screw a bit? and prolly still a vacuum leak somewhere? prolly wouldnt hurt to get that quick warm up hose for my cleaner too huh? lol

but overall i get good power, no bog, and better mileage, just need that tranny rebuilt so the ****er will shift perfect :P

Sounds like its working, just way out to lunch on the adjustment. With the engine ice cold, take off the air cleaner and snap the throttle open to close the choke. How much is the choke plate open? Like, how big is the gap... should be around 1/8" or so.

...should be completely closed, if the car is off after you start it, the choke pulloff will "pull-it-off" to about 1/8"

do a search on choke and my name, I think i've posted a few times the complete checklist on setting up your choke.

3 things, fast idle screw, thermostat position, and pulloff adjustment. If those are all right, you're done.
and yea, as long as you have electrical continuity on that terminal, you're fine. Mine is like that.

I don't think that warm up hose on your air cleaner is all that needed, unless you're driving the car in the dead of winter (are you?).

And yea, probably a vac leak, try using some propane on the hoses and whatnot, see if your idle speed jumps temporarily. Do this after the car is warmed up fully and idling.

for the adjusting on the fast idle, and that stuff, im such a novice i can do the easy things, putting the carb on was essentially a piece of cake, im good and taking off and putting on, but adjusting and stuff ugh... lol

I wont worry about it too much, if i lightly pump the gas it'll start right up, im more worried about the squeel im getting out of 1 of my pulleys, im thinkin its the water pump or alt., and the light oil leak out of my valve cover, the front wheel bearings, the brakes, yea.. lol

Another quick question tho, i had a trans. guy adjust the TV cable earlier, he upped the throttle pressure just about all it can, and my car is shifting SO MUCH BETTER, but can that hurt my tranny at all? it waits till about 4 if i accel. evenly, and shifts firm, like id imagine its supposed to, but i dont want excess pressure on it if i dont have too, and all i can do is ask :-\

Just play with the fast idle screw untill you get it to idle around 1200-1400rpm when first started. Then your set. Just back out the screw to lower the speed, same way the regular idle is adjusted.
