You could argue that the Edelbrock Performer (or GMPP q-jet manifold like comes on the ZZ4) or Weiand Action + are a step up over the factory manifold. But, until you do a lot of other things to the 305, it really isn't needed.

Exhaust, air cleaner (LG4, anyway), cam, heads, intake, carb - that's the performance modification order, and the carb should only be considered for replacement on off-road applications or manual transmission vehicles.

Would you say the Weiand Action+ and Edelbroc Performer are on par with each other? Should one be taken over the other for a particular carb setup? (Such as Weiand w/ Holley carb or Performer w/ Edelbrock carb?)

What all is it going to take to make a carb change from a stock carb anyway. I've been told that if i take off my stock q-jet i will have to change my distributor as well as intake manifold. I am having a little trouble tuning this stock q-jet should i spend money to fix it or just go with a whole new setup.

They're basically equivalent. Chose one, I'd tend toward the Weiand, personally, but either one should be fine. Doesn't matter which carb, either manifold would work similarly with either carb.

Off the thread topic, but you've heard right.

What you should do depends upon what the problem is, but it's hard to beat the stock computer-command q-jet for street performance.
