I'm having problems with my 82 305 carbed TA starting, I think the choke is not working correctly and i'm not sure how to adjust it and if the choke pull off is work right and how to check that also.
can anyome help me and some pics would be great to explain things.
I tried doing a search on this site but i couldn't find my answer.

This is what I know about electric choke. With the car cold, take off the breather and have someone step once on the gas pedal or just do it with the throttle linkage. The choke should close fully also the linkage on the passenger side will step up to the high idle position. When the car is started the choke will start to open almost immediatley and the car will be on high idle. After it is warm enough the choke will be open fully and the carb can be "kicked down" from high idle. If the choke is not opening fully it will be hard to get it off of high idle as there is a pin that keeps the cam on high. That is about it for the choke. If your choke is set properly and the car doesn't start well then it isn't the choke.

I am trying to adjust it correctly now, i adjusted till it got warmed up so i have to wait awhile for it to cool down again and see how it acts when the choke is cold.
this last time i tried the choke flap didn't open fast enough while cranking and it wouldn't start right away.
something still is not right.

Choke shouldn't open while cranking. It should be closed tight so the carb is getting more fuel and less air. As soon as the engine starts it should open slightly to allow air in so the car will run. As the engine warms the choke opens slowly until fully open at which time you can get it off high idle.

correct me on this if i'm wrong but if the flap is closed tight, no air can get it for the engine to start, as the engine cranks it builds some vacume and makes the choke diaphram pull the flap open slightly about 1/8" and amkes a rich condition for the carb and engine to start.
now i have it adjusted to start great and idle high 1200rpm but it idles down and dies after about 5 seconds.
I give up i took it to a shop today and i'll find out what they say tomorrow.

The choke butterfly doesn't totally close off air flow. It just blocks it enough to increase the pull of fuel into the engine so it will start easier. It has to be completely closed, though, to do that properly.

Dieing after a few seconds of running is usually a choke pull-off that is opening the butterfly too far.

I checked the amount of pull of the choke pull off and it was 3/16".

I know it has to be a choke problem ,i just don't have something adjusted right, but i do know that if the flap is closed all the way the engine will not start but if it's slightly opened it will start fine.

Re: carb problem

Dealing with this problem again !

I had it repaired in a shop and it took him all week to get it right and it worked good through the winter but last spring it was way too high so i moved it some and it has run good all summer but now it is being a pain to start and keep running withoput my foot on the gas feathering it to kep it running.

Which way increases the choke to come on more ,left ( counter closck wise ) or right ( clockwise )
I feel more tension when i turn it to the right and less to the left.
