is this all i need to run carbed??
hey guys...i was looking around summitracing trying to price things out on what i would need to run carbed instead of TBI. is this all i need:
carb and intake combo
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...S&autoview=sku
Distributor
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
I just wanted this ignition kit
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
AFPR

the only thing i'm not really sure about is the distributor and ignition system. are those two compatable and are they the right parts?
thanks guys

If you have an auto, you'll have to control lockup somehow.
Why do you need the ignition kit? What engine/combo are you putting this on?
Don't worry about the ecm. It will no longer be controlling anything and you can disconnect it and remove the check engine light. There's nothing left for it to run, 'course you'll lose cruise and converter lockup.

well i have a couple posts about what i wanted to do. obviously you guys didn't read it though...hahaha. it's ok though. i'm not doing anything really special. i just want to run carbed for awhile and get the feel of tuning a carb since i have never done so in my life. I think it would be a good thing to know how to do.
i'm not worried about the ecm...it won't be running anypart of my car anyways. what i really want to do is put it on now...stock 305(not looking to gain power just because it's carbed) but tune for every mod i make after...ie, hedders, cam, heads...etc. once i get everything tuned and see how it runs...i'm gonna throw the TBI back on with a TBI adapter plate and then learn to tune chips.
you can see in this thread the full explanation
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...ea-carbed.html
now anyways...the ignition...like i said above it. i just want it, but my concern is the compatability. i'm not sure if that is the distributor that i need or if that ignition is compatable with that distributor....so if i could get answers to those questions i'd be happy.

and money is no object?
If you're not looking to gain power, what are your goals?
Listen to Fast355 or make some changes to your motor that require the carb/intake swap.
If you want to get the 'feel' of tuning a carb. Try a used stock intake with a quadrajet and 'old school' HEI. 'Bout a quarter of the duckies, same performance. Just me though. Sorry.

I agree with the above. All the extras are a lot of cash. The ignition stuff is also not required. A non-CC HEI and coil will have you covered.
read again...i'm not NOT looking for power. but i don't think i'm gaining HP by just putting a carb on. I do want to gain some power, but it's mostly about learning. adjusting for different mods. of course i want to gain power from mods that i do...i just want to do it with a carb instead of a TBI for now. i may instead of going back to tbi buy a crate motor with a carb set up all ready to go. i still want to keep the 305 for another prodject if i do go crate motor. but it'll be fun for now to play with. i'm hopin low 14's eventually with this motor. i'm just looking at options on getting there. i may just stay tbi and learn about tuning the current system with chips.

If you are really into learning (which I think is great), you should probably learn how to turn a tbi car. If you haven't noticed, carburators haven't been place on new cars factory for over 15 years. I bet that you can find one of your friends that has an older vehicle with a carb and learn to tune on that. Low 14's with an l03 base won't be too hard with proper tune, lt1 cam, cleaned up heads/ intake, and suspension. Not trying to tell you what to do, just giving a suggestion.
Well...I think cost wise. It would cost me the same to do it carbed as to do it TBI. the extra 300 or so i would spend on a carb and distributor is what i would pay for getting all of my burning stuff together. plus it would cost me more in chips everytime i change something until i get it right. and actually none of my friends have carbs. it's just personal for me to learn how to tune a carb. carbs work best around where they are going to peak, and EFI(TBI included) is better overall with a wider power range.
i'm looking to find what kind of power each set up can make and when i get to the level i want with this engine i will switch back to TBI to get a broader range better for everyday driving.

All you need is a burner and some chips (these are flash-roms, and are good for around 11,000 burn cycles). This can be had for around $120 from moates.net. I've yet to need anything more then my Pocket Programmer II that I got years ago.
You can convert to carb, but not a lot will translate over to the FI. Maybe the pumpshot tuning and some experience with how the engine behaves as you vary the tune and SA. Although the operating principals of a carb and TBI are the same, the stock algorithm for TBI isnt similar at all to a carb. It uses some butchered form of speed density instead of a mass flow reference like the carb, which is how it should be done.

well i think i found out totally what i'm gonna do for now atleast. with my current 305 which i believe is speed density...i'm going to just do a full exhaust and an open element. i will then start saving for a crate motor...still undecided about that, but probably a turn-key Ram Jet 350HP motor...or if i choose a carbed one a turn-key 383 fast burn...but i don't want to keep it carbed so more than likely the ram jet with possibly a bigger cam
