strong smell at idle?

hey guys had this problem for awhile now, i have a 350 with a lunati cam that has duration of 227/233 at tdc, running 14 degrees base timing, and a low compression of 9 to 1.
im using a wideband tuner, its reading an afr of 14.0-14.8 at idle and it smells really strong, i was told to advance the base timing even more, any suggestion?

Re: strong smell at idle?

14* is quite a bit of advance already, go any further and you will get that nice pinging sound at cruise and heavy throttle. If the smell is coming from the engine compartment, it will have little to do with your exhaust unless you have some serious header gasket leaks. Have you checked the PCV and all the manifold ports for vacuum leaks? What type of fuel lines are you using? Is your carb leaking from the bowl? If it is the exhaust that smells, what type of ignition components are you using? Plug heat range correct, wires good, coil strong? Think about what would cause the problem before adjusting anything under the hood, and eliminate as many possible issues as you can before adjusting stuff. Hope this helps,

Re: strong smell at idle?

theres no smell from the engine compartment, it is the exhaust, once you walk around to the back of the car you cant miss the smell, i have no exhaust or fuel leaks. my ignition is good, it is msd plug wire, coil, distributor, and ignition box. the whole engine and everything on it is failry new, less than a year old, but alway had the smell problem since i built the engine
