Running rich

Hi guys, this site is the best. The carburetor on my 1984 2.8 v6 camaro is running rich and sometimes even stalling out when idling (my mechanic said something about 10% o2 or something) now, because of this i wont be able to pass the smog test.. but he said im looking at 400-600 for someone to tweak the carb to get it running better. He might have a guy willing to do it for 350.. am I getting ripped off, because honestly im not totally againest the idea of ripping it out and messing with it myself. Still fairly new to messing around with cars thou and would have no idea what it would entail. Anyone have any recommendations? (keep in mind, im 18 and strapped for cash >.

Welcome to the Board.

Your choices are: Find a friend that knows what they're doing to fix it for you; pay someone to fix it; learn to fix it yourself.

Good choice.

Understand that somewhere in the neighborhood of 25% of "carb problems" are caused by the carb itself.

Is your SES light coming on? If so, have you retrieved the trouble code(s)?
