Re: Carb replacement
If you're keeping the computer control, the only carb that will work is a stock one. Your carb can probably be rebuilt to fix whatever has made you decide that it needs to be replaced.

Re: Carb replacement
Without input from the sensors on the carb, the computer would pout and refuse to control the timing.
To eliminate the computer, you'd need to replace the carb and the distributor, and wire up some means of controlling the torque converter clutch on the transmission.
The easiest way out would be to fix your factory carb.

Re: Carb replacement
So, you can get a new quadrajet and HEI distributor for a 79 Camaro with a 305, or you can get a carb for your car.
You should really consider either rebuilding your carb or replacing it with an exact match. The computer system works well in cars like yours.
By the way, what makes you think the carb is bad?

Re: Carb replacement
All the headaches of not being able to tune your car, and damn sensors going out check engine lights etc. Yeah you can tune efi at home now adays but it requires a bunch of software/hardware (lots of money) and lots of knowledge about hard to learn stuff.

Well, since this is the "Carburetor" forum. . .
I'm afraid the only "BS" and "crap" is what you're spreading.

Don't paint with too broad of a brush. The CC carb is a fine street-performance system. The emissions equipment doesn't bother anything. Most problems people experience with computerized 3rd gens are due to ignorance.
Still waiting to hear why the originator thinks he needs a different carb.

In a round about sort of way, and as nice a way as could be done I was hinting at maybe doing a search for CCC's and he could see the threads on this topic. Or even look at the posts I have done to see what that thread said.
That being said, I'm in the process of swapping out my entire motor for another - and keeping the CCC IF it does not have limiters for my newer, larger engine.
I didn't feel the need to say any more since Apeiron already said what was needed to be done to remove the CCC. I just try to be light hearted and have a laugh once in a while, sorry if my post came across as being antagonistic - but I thought the
would have hinted I was just saying something for fun. Joined: Sep 2004

I didn't mean it as antagonistic, I really wanted to know what you did...
The only thing I have ever done with CCC is remove and replace with older non-ccc carbs and replace 7 pin HEI with 4 pin/vacuum unit. I honestly didn't know they were tuneable. That's why I try to read these pieces when they come up. I don't have one now, but when I come accross one, I won't throw it under the bus immediately... I will give it a few good tries to make it a strong runner.

If you start with a lo-po LG4, you might need to replace the main jets for a 383. Other than that, set everything to spec, tune the secondaries just like a non-CC q-jet, maybe replace the stock module and coil with aftermarket, and it will do the rest of the tuning. That's the beauty of it - the primaries adjust themselves.

I believe the '86 ECM was different from '84. '86 had knock sensor, electric cooling fan, and flat-top pistons, '84 would only have those if L69.
Otherwise, though, the systems are pretty much the same.
