ok. this is my situation, and i would appreciate any help. my 86 camaro, with a computer contolled q-jet starts cutting out at very high rpms (for instance, when i floor it, and it is at peak rpm before it hits 2nd, or getting onto the highway when i hammer it and i hit peak rpm right before it hits 3rd). then i take the lid off my air cleaner, and its covered in gas. there is a puddle of gas laying in the base of my air cleaner. today was the first day i have noticed the gas, but the past 3 weeks it has been cutting out at high rpm. scares the **** outta me when i am merging onto the highway and then my car starts to quit...

any ideas? i checked out the check engine light the other day, code 53 egr valve, so i replaced it. didnt help this problem at all.

why are you running that round air filter instead of the factory filter inside the air cleaner itself?

 

my stock round air filter got all covered in gas when the gas flies outta the carb, so i cut that 90 degree bend off of a cavalier intake i had laying around, and the new filter set up doesnt get saturated with fuel

 

have you adjusted the floats to see if the secondaries are stuck? checked fuel pressure? etc

 

i know how to do none of the above... but why would any of that make gas shoot into my air cleaner

 

go get a chilton's manual and check what i've mentioned, should be under $20. Floats stuck will cause fuel to squirt out of the vent tube, and too high of fuel pressure could cause the same, fuel to squirt out.

 

The E4ME sticky in the top section of this forum has the information about the float and needle & seat.

Do you get gas in the air cleaner under any type of driving, or only WOT?

 

only very little during regualar driving, but more at WOT

 

id check out the fuel pressure first when my fuel pump was going out y car did that same exact thing

 

well my cousin said my fuel pump might be going, when i bout the car this time of year in 2005. it sometimes hesitates. so dillon, when the pump is going out, it can cause irregular fuel spray from the carb?

 

i cant say for sure but when i bought mine with the q jet and 305 it would hesitate and stutter at wot. i didnt know what to do so i drove it for a month then it wouldnt start. if i tried to start it with the air cleaer off and hood up i could see it blowing gas up out. i later found that the fuel pump was bad. i never fixed it though so i dont know if that will fix your problem. i swaped motor, carb, trans, and went to mechanical fuel pump. i cant say for sure that the fuel pump caused my carb to spray gas and stutter but i suspect that was the problem. hope this helps, good luck. post up when you figure it out , im curious
