Cammed 305 running lean?

Recently I swapped the cam and intake in my 305, to the Summit K1102 Cam, and EPS Performer Mani. I have yet to jet the carb, Its definatley running way lean. It has trouble starting when I dont give it a lot of gas, and isnt pulling as hard as it should. Is this effecting my performance at all?

The current carb is a 650 cfm eldebrock with stock jets

I have that cam in my 305, stock heads, ZZ3 (Performer) intake, and a 1406 Edlebock on top. (600cfm) I went from the stock q-jet to the Edlebrock last season, and I needed to step up a LOT from the stock jetting to get the Edlebrock to delivery enough fuel under wot. I ended up with .101 jets in the secondaries, and richer/faster rod. I left the primary jetting alone, it runs find under part throttle. Running lean is defintley going to effect performance, and more importantly, the life of your engine.

The hard starting could be several different variables, everything is sealed up tight from the intake swap, right? That cam is very mild, so I wouldn't pin it on that, factory like setting should make it idle just fine.

Sound like it to me, you'd have a lot of tuning to make that run right.

Ok so i am just going to Jet the carb and tune it, Hopefully this helps because right now it only pulls a little bit harder then before. So maybe this will help the performance. The car hesitates when i get on it to..Might this be a part of running lean? I hope this helps this little 305 get going...

I'd consider the accelerator pump in the middle hole, .095 primary jets, and .101 secondary jets. That gave me a good hit off idle, and pull right through 5500rpm. Your jetting needs should be similar, its atleast a good starting place. Make sure the timing is right before tackling that carb, you'll fight jetting whoes all day if the timing isn't right.

Well, you'll need a timing light to verify the timing. I'd bet the mechanic will be willing to check at set the timing, its not a very involved procedure. What type of ignition is in the car. If it used to be a computer controlled setup it won't work right without the computer, you'd need to convert to a mechanical/vacuum advance setup. Maybe go over you full setup here online and we can make some recommendations. I'm sure some other folks will chime in at some point, lots of people with plenty of experience.

Don't forget, the search button is your friend. I definetly recommend doing some reading up on things like carb tuning, timing, etc, to further understand what your trying to accomplish with your tuning.
