i got my baby started today and took it for a mile long test drive and on the way back i was easing of the gas to make a turn and it died. tried to crank it didnt fire. a bystander came by so i opened the hood and opened the choke and he cranked it and a couple cranks and it fired.
Btw i had the air cleaner off and just running it with straight carb. if i were to have the air cleaner hooked up would it keep the choke open enough so it gets air to fire and run?

Have you got the choke wire on? Is the choke light on while the engine is off, and turns off after it starts?

Re: choke on 305 carb
i havent personally messed around with the carb and choke myself besides changing the fuel filter and then took the air cleaner off ,its on now though. when i turn the key to posistion before start i see a yellow choke light. dont know if it helps.
----------
the light goes off after it starts im pretty sure i will comment later on after i get a radiator problem fixed.

Re: choke on 305 carb
without the air cleaner one of the vacuum lines might be unplugged. anyway, check to make sure the vacuum line from the air cleaner to the carb is plugged. Easiest way to do that is to put air cleaner back on and reconnect vacuum line from air cleaner to to carb.

Air cleaner helps your carb get heated air -- nice feature in winter

Re: choke on 305 carb
The line to the choke pull-off T's off the same vacuum fitting as the line up to the air cleaner's Thermac (hot air flapper door) system. If you leave it open (air cleaner removed but vacuum nipple not plugged) you won't have vacuum to open the choke pull-off and it could definitely flood out.
