car idles high
car idles high
Hello all, i just bought my first muscle car and it has a 305 carb. when it is in Neutral or park the RPMs stay kinda of high and when i put it from park or neutral, to drive or reverse there is a jerk then all is fine. one person told me (without looking) it had to be the transmission. a couple people looked at it and thought the carburetor needed tunning. I just wanted to hear some thoughts from some people more familiar with muscle cars. thanks ahead of time for your help.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
First, some basic questions:
Is the choke light coming on?
Is the alternator charging properly?
Those questions assume the choke is not opening fully. Have you checked that?

So, does your choke open up all the way after running a few minutes, or does it hang half open?

I had the same problem. Then after driving like that for months it started to run rough. Brought it in. Found out it needed a new choke.

This may be off the wall - so fair warning:
It doesn't get very cold where I live, so I just took the choke plate out of my carb and have never had any kind of problems. I read where a lot of people have choke-related problems. If you live in warm country - you don't need it!

I dont have a choke on my carb, the only down side is that it will take longer for you to warm up your car. You dont really need a choke as long as you dont mind warming up your car with your foot. Hope this helps you, also you could just turn the idle down.
