I Really dont know how i got this car home...
so i bought a new t/a today, paid 900 for it, was running a little rough but im 100% sure its just tuning. but i drove it home just fine, its an 86 lg4, but when i got it home i went to tune it and what do i find. the tps from the carb is missing, the mixture control is disconnected(let alone it has a different connector than it is supposed to) and the car is still running the computer controllered distributor. it ran fine the whole way home, not as powerful as i am used to in my l03 which really shouldnt be said... ever, but i cant say ive ever seen anyone do something like that before... what do you guys think? ill post pics soon to show what im talking about. right now its time to go buy a new mixture control solenoid and a tps.

Your going to have to post some pics. that carb may be out of a caprice or a grand prix or chrysler truck, or the tps is removed and the initial timing is advanced, while the computer connector is diconected, letting it run in limp home mode.

No pics of the whole car!? I would get a new carb, theyre cheap. Unless your a big fan of the q-jet then get a pro to rebuild it.

Thats definetly different. The drivers side has some numbers stamped in vertically, two rows, the one thats all numbers is what you need to right down to cross referance it, and find out what the heck that thing came out of. I've never seen a Canadian carburator but I don't think thats what you have there. I'm gonna say that your going to end up changing out that carb. OR getting your money back.

You might want to make sure the wiring is still there for an original carb before you go that route, whoever put that thing on may have gotten a little happy with the wire cutters when they were in there too.

I think fivekid7 would get a real kick out these picts. I am pretty sure I've seen him post a few times that camaros/T'As don't have rear vacuum break carbs. Though that one is certainly not original to the car.

O.K. the best I could find is that it came off an '85 or '86 Chevy/GMC pickup. The link that creepingdeath posted is for a company outta Wa. too. I have bought several parts from them and always got them real quick, even though I'm all the way down in Houston,Tx.

Thats pretty clean, if you got the cash for a new carb, thats what I'd do - New Q-JET- $379 plus shipping from carbs unlimited. Fine tune the idle screw and enjoy.

Does the car happen to be a T5 car? There is an all original 86 Camaro around here with that same carb, it is a T5 car. I was under the impression the TPS was only for transmission shifting.

i think im going to just get a new carb for that link. they seem reasonable enough. especially for a freshly rebuilt carb. with sensors.

Looks like I'm still right about the rear vacuum break, huh?
Camas_Camaros, I happen to have a recently rebuilt, store-bought CC carb I don't need anymore (off the car getting the LS1/T56). It adjusted up nicely and passed emissions testing with flying colors. Let me know if you're interested - half-price sale opportunity.

Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
so your telling me my carb probably isn't original cuz mine looks exactly like that one
Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
Not the original carb, if it's a US car. It's not even computer controlled- it's a pickup truck carb from the early/mid 80s. You'll notice it's got no plug for a TPS (becuase it has no TPS) and the plug on top is actually for a dual-stage accelerator pump circuit, which is completely different than a Mixture Control solenoid.
You need a real computer controlled QJet, not that non-computer controlled truck QJet.

I know some of the '85 and '86 chevy trucks were equiped with vacuum advanced HEI and Knock sensors, instead of TPS/MC soleniods. But the factory moved on to something else in '87.

Yup those numbers referance an '81-'86 Chevy/GMC Pick Up Truck. Most likely was originally installed on Late '83 or '84 if the date code is accurate.

i think i got the same carb but again my engine i believe it to be off a pick up car its supposed to be a 305 now its got a 350 in it also car runs without the computer hooked up and if thats not a mixture control solenoid it will make sense cuz every time i start the car with the computer hooked up it rattles a lot like if it was injecting fuel or something. ill get the #'s

Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
Carbs unlimited Inc. has a feature that when you click on rebuilt carbs it lets you search by carb # click that and it gives you a box to enter a #. When it comes back up it lists the application for that specific carb. and their price for a remanufatured replacement.
My car is an '84 Lg4 the carb # is 17084201, guess you can see how easy it might be to order the wrong carb # 17084281 but there's no mistaking the differances when you put the two side by side.

If your not having any issues with the way it runs then why change it out now. There is a big differance between the carb you have and the carb that started this thread. It's entirely possible that whoever swapped the carb on your 305 may have also changed out the distributor also. If its the original dist. it will have a 7 pin module.

Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
I took a closer look at your picts and it appears that you have a vacuum advanced HEI distributor on that motor already. If its a little ruff you may want to consider learning how to fine tune that thing. It could be it just needs a little TLC inside. That non computer controled carb with the vacuum advanced HEI dist. you have is a good setup for a 383 but you will need to tweak things a bit for the right advance curve and secondary rods may need to be changed out, simple and cheap, saving you more to put into the tranny.
Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
Canadian market 3rd gen carb Camaros and Firebirds did NOT have a computer controlled QJet or computer controlled distributor. There's a sticky about Canadian stuff at the top of this forum about it. So for your carb and distributor, Brennan, you might well have the original stuff on your motor because it's a Canadian car from what you've told us.
However, the pics of the carb by the original poster in this thread (Camas-Camaro) show he definitely does NOT have the right carb regardless of whether it's a Canadian or a US market car. He's got a truck carb that was never, to the best of my knowlege, ever used in a 3rd gen F-body.

Ah, have heard other reports of '87's with CC. Was probably about the time Canada adopted U.S. emissions standards (or something like them).

Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
forget to look at your thread for a couple days and BAM! so many posts, im pming you Five7kid, good thing i didnt buy that new carb haha.
Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
it's simple, the computer has a base setting that it allwasy defeults too, that car most likely has a knock sensor, so it can control the spark advance. as long as some gas is flowing in due to air flow in the carb you will get combustion. Q-jets will allways run, its just a matter of how well

Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
i was just speaking like i dont know why someone would run that set up, i know the computer has a limp home advance curve, im just surprised this set up has been working. especially the way it was. im just going to be glad when the rebuilt one im getting from five7kid gets here, finally being able to take it for a spin, reacting how i'm used to, and the check engine light off. let alone that engine is getting a full make over while im waiting for the carb, new valve covers, ac has been removed, smog pump (which wasnt set up) has been removed, along with the air tube system using brass plumbing plugs to cover the holes, new spark plugs, new cap and rotor, new spark plug wires, air filter, the whole nine yards.

It should feel like a Whole New Car.
If your gettting new Valve Covers I hope they are the Baffled type. Hopefully you are still running the stock air cleaner and can use the filtered PCV return in the cleaner assembly. I'de rather have the oil go thru the air filter than get all over the under side of the hood. It will make a mess if you don't........................................

Re: I Really dont know how i got this car home...
i like the older carbs, i put on a 750 cfm q-jet from a 81 vette works great. as for the breather, you can get one of those little midget knock off k&N filters to stick in the hole if you dont run the return to the air cleaner.

im not going that extreme under the hood, just removing the air system, and the a/c system, because neither of them are hooked up correctly. keeping the stock air cleaner yes, and i haven't decided on my valve covers yet but they most likely will be baffled.

Before we get too far along, have you verified the electricals for the CC system are still there? From your original post, sounds like it is, but I'd feel better if you know for sure they are.
