gaskets
Which gasket should be used for a autonatic '85 Chevy E4ME? The application will be for a stock LG4 car and I want to drive for max fuel economy. The secondaries almost never get opened up (just driven to commute 10 miles).

Re: gaskets
Use whatever matches what it originally came with, as it needs to match the manifold too, not just the carb. My L69 came with the open style gasket.

Re: gaskets
the closed gasket made me wonder. it's kinda odd because both appear to leave needed airways on this baseplate open.

Been so long since I've seen one, not sure of the details. But, I believe early 70's q-jets.

Re: gaskets
If I remember correctly, it has something to do with heat, *I think* from the exhaust crossover/hot air choke setup on some of the early '70s iron manifolds, and keeping heat away from certain parts of the carb (the 'closed' gaskets also used a thin metal plate under the carb as well).
Something along those lines anyway. Just use the open one and you'll be just fine

The ones that had the heat passage up to the carb gasket had a nub on the driver's side up by the front mount bolt. Neither of those gaskets would cover it. From the 60's. The 396 originally had a q-jet on it, somebody had put one of those Holley econocarbs on it, I wanted a "real" q-jet. Finding a gasket that covered that exhaust passage wasn't as easy as you might think. Ended up using the plate/gasket multiple sandwich (which was supposed to be a heat insulator) as it had that built into it.
Anyway, just use the open gasket.
