'87 didn't have TBI available.

I'm not sure from your description what it's doing. You seem to be using "crank" and "start" interchangeably.

Re: tbi to carb conversion wont crank help

It's not a TBI, it's a computer controled Q-Jet. This evening I did the same conversion - fairly easy and straight forward suprisingly. Anyway, mine wouldn't turn over at first and then I realized that when I put in the new carb i mixed up the TACH and BATT wires that go to the new distributor. The thinner (yellow for me) was the TACH and big red was BATT.

Switching the "Tach" and "Batt" wires won't keep it from "turning over". It might keep it from firing or starting, but it will "crank" and "turn over" with those wires switched.

Sounds a lot like a battery or starter problem.

Re: tbi to carb conversion wont crank help

sounds like the wire for the starter is not getting power. first make sure that the small wire on the starter is correctly hooked up.

IIRC 87 did not have vats. so there should be no prob with that. make sure that all of your wires are hooked up I.E. on my car there was 3 sets of wires that went to the main starter nut. also make sure grounds are good.
