85 L69 in-tank pump?
I just got an 85 L69 5-speed IROC that has been sitting for over 5 years and is suffering from a full tank of old, dead gas. I got it started & it ran fine for 3-4 minutes, then died from fuel starvation. I remember reading that the L69s had an in-tank electric pump, does anyone have specific experience with this? I need to get it running well enough to drive a short distance & pull on to a trailer & I'm trying to get my ducks in a row!

85 was the last year for the L69, it was an IROC only deal, they didn't make many of them, I don't if GM put them in Firebirds in 85.

86 was actually the last year for the L69, though only 74 were produced. Check the following link for info on the in-tank pump:

Ah yes, I remember seeing that in the white book- thanks for the correction- weren't most of the 86 L69s race cars? Has anyone ever seen a "civillian" one?

I've heard that L69's had the in-tank electric and the engine-mounted mechanical, I've heard only engine-mounted mechanical until '84, I've heard only engine-mounted mechanical through '84 - basically, I've never gotten a clear story.
But, apparently, some L69's got the in-tank electric. May have been a dealer-installed option, or a vapor lock solution kit.

You're right, the car does have a mechanical pump on the block, I think the L69s have both, I'm just trying to decide if I should bring an external fuel source to get the car moving. I have checked out austinthirdgen, my '82 is licenced and insured, I hope to bring it to an upcoming event.

ARRGH! I'm working this Saturday! My 82 isn't quite stock, with the 3.42 first gear, it will light them up as long you hold your foot down!

Yes, my 84' L69 Notchback parts car has a mechanical fuel pump on the block, AND the electric fuel pump in the tank. Im not sure why this is tho?

Re: 85 L69 in-tank pump?
Late '84-86 L69 got the in-tank electric pusher pump from the factory. '83 and early-'84 got a dealer installed in-tank pump setup if the owner experienced vapor lock problems.
How far do you have to go with the car? On my '84 T/A parts car all the lines are rotted out so I put the fuel pump feed hose on the nearby coolant recovery bottle and used that for a gas tank. I imagine you could fill it up with enough gas to go 10-15 miles.

That's a great idea! I had not thought of that! I was going to rig up a gallon gas can & hose, but the overflow bottle would be perfect. The car is sinking into the guy's backyard I got it from, I need to break it loose & drive it across the yard, around the house & out to the trailer and then back it off etc when we get to my place- 15-20 minutes of running time.

Re: 85 L69 in-tank pump?
That is pretty much what I was doing with my parts car. The brake lines and rear control arm mount are also rusted away so that makes it extra fun.
Are you going to be parting the car out?
