keeps running.... ?? WHY!?!

just recently my camaro decided that IT is going to tell ME when it is going to shut off.... after driving around town for a bit to get parts, food, and then back home (like 25 blocks tops) when I pull in the driveway to shut it off, everything shuts off but the motor gets one more long burst of gas and does a long blown out wind sound as it finally runs out of fuel and shuts off.....

(kinda like the old trucks on the movies where it runs and pops and sputters before dying.... just mine don't sputter)

can someone please point me in the right direction to help me out with fixing this. I'm redoing the intake gaskets in the morning and will have it all torn apart to work on so some advice would be greatly appreciated.....

Thank You SOOOOOOOOOO Much,
Chris

What kind of carb? What intake, where is the timing set? What is your idle speed?

It's typically caused by the idle being set too high, or the ignition set too advanced.

Holley 750 Double Pumper
Edlebrock Aluminum Intake
9* Advanced Timing
1000rpm Park; 850rpm In Gear

can't set the idle any lower than that because when I get to a stop sign if I have to stop to soon it dies, or if I give it gas backing out of the driveway so that I can turn (posi don't like to turn, LOL) it would die, that is the lowest possible idle that I could set it at and keep her running...

Starting on the car now but can get all replies on my phone so any help is very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Just tryng to get an idea of why you would run such a big carb. But as five7kid stated, fast idle is the most common reason for run-on. And 1k rpm is fast, so that would be my guess. I had a holley 600 on my 377 a few years ago and it did the same thig. After i toyed with for a few hours and got to idle at 800 or so in park, the run on went away. Something you might try to test it is to shut the engine off with it in gear since the idle is lower. see what that does.

thats the answer i was looking for! Thank You!

car was built for drag only but due to certain financial issues it has become a daily driver as well as a strip car, that's why so big.... sure looks pretty underneath!

Let me know how it works out. Almost nothing's worse than your beloved third gen not running right. Been there.

Check the "Holley Tuning" sticky in the top section of this forum. Very likely you need to get the throttle blades adjusted as recommended there so you're getting idle contribution from all 4 bores. Even if your carb doesn't have mixture adjusting screws for the secondaries, there are still secondary idle circuits there.

The secondary transfer slots weren't properly machined on my 650 DP throttle plate. Until I fixed that, I couldn't get mine to run properly, either, especially when coming to a stop.

Check the timing. Mine was over advanced and I had that issue.

Re: keeps running.... ?? WHY!?!

several possible causes..
1) advanced timing
2) high idle
3) carbon buildup
4) overheating
5) msd needs a diode

http://www.msdignition.com/page.aspx?id=3296

The top is if you wire your msd a certain way, you might need a diode spliced in...these are all the causes of engine "run on" or desieling..

Granted this would happen in my 67 chevy truck (in-line 6), but when the weather was hot and I had been driving for a decent amount it was fairly common for my truck to do a little dieseling because of the carb being hot.
