TPI to Carb conversion

How is the low end torque and horse power now, also the fuel mileage. If you had to do it all over again would you and is it a daily driver or a strip car.
I have a 90' Vette w/TPI setup and Im also a member of the Corvette Forum, if you ask those guys these question they send hate mail.

P.S. I love old school horse power.

Nothing like a show of respect to get the desired results.

And that was nothing like it. . .

Personally, I've never owned TPI. I know a few that have/do, and have seen/heard plenty on this Board about it, including from those who have converted from TPI to carb. But, I've never done it personally, don't have any dyno data to point you to, but in general, max torque moves up in RPMs and fuel economy goes down. How much? I wouldn't hazard a guess.

Re: TPI to Carb conversion

I am currently converting my TBI Camaro to a carb. I think it is worth it. PM me if you have any questions about it. You will need a Mallory regulator. I can get you the part number later.

Re: TPI to Carb conversion

if you look @ the top of the carb thread there is tab that is dedicated to this conversion. it has lots of information as far as what you need and what you dont. i found it very usefull. if you search there are alot of troubleshooting threads that might hel you out if you come across some issues. good luck.

Re: TPI to Carb conversion

i converted my tpi car to carb about 3 months ago. I have a t56 transmission and i liked how i would get close to 20mpg on the interstate with 3.73 gears. other than that powerwies is about the same. i went with a holley dp 750, rpm air gap intake and magnetic pick up dizzy. i did go a tenth faster at the track but i'm sure that was due to launchin issues with the 6speed.

i make power up until ~6k where as before it stopped at around 5300

If i had to do it again i would do it the same.

Re: TPI to Carb conversion

I just finished a TPI to carb swap and have dyno results for both. I have all supporting mods (headers, 4" exhaust, etc) and I have a healthy cam and AFR heads. With the TPI I made 300rwhp and 340 torque. Going to a Holly 750dp and a Summit Stage 2 intake (a rebadged Weiand airgap) I picked up over 50 rwhp and torque increased slightly. With the modified TPI my engine was done at 5300 rpm, with carb we stopped the dyno pull at 6000 at it was still climbing. If you have all the mods, cam, heads, exhaust, etc. then doing the swap will definitely gain you power.

Re: TPI to Carb conversion

what type of distributor did you replace the stock electronic one, and have you heard of replacing it with a points, vacuum dist. I seen some where someone had done it before I started working on my 2.8/3.1 v-6 engine, but I don't know where. My dist and fi system is all crap and doesn't work properly so I changing fi to carb.

But not really a fair comparision.TPI has know top end breathing problems.
Better test would carb v HSR or MR.
FWIW;
in order to sort out a string of injection related problems I just temporary replaced my HSR with a Vic Jnr and 750 Vac .
Kicks ****> 6800 no problem.Need to hit the track and get some comparison times
