Just curious to find out how many owners had the issue with no air or substantially reduced air going into the intake hoses after installing head light black outs or clear covers?

 

I've never had it because I've never put headlight covers on.

I wouldn't put headlight covers on unless I had another way of allowing cool air to the air cleaner.

 

Well I haven't done it to my car. Was going to. But I guess the only way to put the covers is to have the TPI or MFI system on the Camaro. Or like you said, find another way of getting air in.

Short of pulling 2 headlights, for incoming air duct (drag racer trick) The amount of air that gets in past the headlights wouldn't allow a real mouse to breathe, much less a V8 mouse!

 

Well I don't know how "ghetto" it would look, but I was thinking since i have the dual snorkle cleaner, to use the upper narrow vents off of a 85-92 trans am hood and place them on the hood where the air ducts are. I can see issue with rain, but I don't drive my car in the rain anymore since I did a 720 onto on coming traffic years ago. F Bodies and rain don't mix.

 

My first pass at Topeka last weekend was slower than I expected (although the first run down the track after being driven to the track usually is). I wondered if the dual snorkel was holding it back, so I removed it for then next pass. It was .04 sec quicker, but also sputtered down track, which it has never done before. For the next two time trials, I put the dual snorkel back on, and it was another .03 sec quicker with no sputtering down track.

I may not have what you define as a "real V8 mouse", but I can say I don't fully buy into your argument. My driver side scoop isn't even an L69 piece (they became scarce a few years ago), just an LG4 scoop adapted to an L69 duct.

 

By "real V8 mouse", I simply meant a SBC V8 vs a small furry mammal.

My argument wasn't against the L69 air cleaner assembly. It was aginst the amount or air coming in through the headlights vs no headlights.

 

Perhaps I misunderstood, then. Are you saying the stock set-up flows well enough around the headlights that you don't need to remove a headlight to get sufficient flow?

Not sure how to reconcile your first and last statement.

 

I never said anything about sufficiency.

I only said that with the headlights in, there isn't a great deal of air coming in, around that location. Removing the 2 inner headlights on Camaros & ducting the incoming air from there (cutting away any firewall sheetmetal in the way), is a big drag racing "trick".

I simply do not feel, that the amount of air coming in around the headlights, is all that big.

You've gotten me so confused after explaining my explanation...I'm confusing myself now!

Simply put.....IMHO, the amount of air coming in past the stock 4 headlights, is not that much.

 

Okay, I think we're on the same page now.

The flow around the 4 headlights is sufficient for the flow capability of the L69 scoops. It is also better than sucking hot underhood air into the engine. But, if you do something other than the L69 scoops, you can improve the air flow over what will flow around the headlights.
