L69 ducting idea

I'm perturbed because I just lost an auction for a pair of gently used L69 flex ducts, and lost it by $2.50- winning bid was 102.50 plus 12 shipping .

Ramairbox.com wants $91.89 for a SINGLE flex duct. So I got to thinking about using a silicone reducer, to a 4" tube, and connect some of the non HO ducts from the elbows to the air cleaner since they fit the inlets, but not the aircleaner base. Make sense?

If my calculations are correct, I'd need a 4.5" to 4" reducer, a small length of 4" diameter SS tubing, and then the smaller units that I have would work, and give me the additional length I'll need for the taller intake and to clear the STB.

Has anybody else tried this, and if so do you have any pics? I doubt I'm the first to do or attempt anything with a 3rd gen.

HawkZ28,

How did the silicone reducer work out? Do you have any pictures? I was able to find a dual snorkle and now am in the same fix - no hose. I've never worked w/large silicone hose before. Any tips?

Thanks -

Re: L69 ducting idea

THANKS! I figured it had to be similar to when I built a 3" MAF housing for our Colorado and fabbed up the Ram Air/CAI.

I wish I could tell you......haven't had the time (or funds) to try it yet due to ACL reconstruction, higher priority projects and maintanence on the Z and our other 3 cars- everyone is due for new tires in a 6 month spread, my Colorado gets a new built trans since I just grenaded it (and it's my DD- 6" of snow in a Grand Am is no fun), and I have a stockpile of parts to go on the Z when I pull the engine this or next weekend.

I'm hoping this summer I'll be able to tackle it. If you try it before me, let me know- be sure to use hairspray at your joints. I'll be sure to post up pics and results when I get to it! Just don't hold your breath waiting.

Subscribing to this thread

Recently got my dual snork air cleaner, but sadly the ducts weren't included. I've been wanting to fab my own but haven't had the time to get to it yet. It'll be interesting to see how yours turn out. I've got hopes for this solution, as I've seen too many duct tape ducts out there. I want mine to look at least half way decent.

I've also been entertaining the idea of running the ducts down through the front on each side where the battery and evap cannister sits by relocating them, and then having the ducts scoop air from either the front grille, below by the air dam, or by removing the front indicator lights and use the openings there, thusly creating a ram air intake. Only thing is, I'm not sure if it's even possible to run duct work through the front as I haven't really gotten a good look at whats inside the bumper in regards to frame rails, sheet metal, radiator support and what have you. Anyone else ever do anything like it? Do you think it could work?

Anywho, best of luck with your projects. Keep us posted

Re: L69 ducting idea

The OD of the snorkel is a little bit more than 14 inches around or a 4.5 circle when divided by 3.14.

After searching I found that 4.5" heat/fire resistant ducting is rare, expensive and usually ugly. After more searching noticed how much better black silicone tubing looks and costs is the same or less than aircraft air hosing. I wonder if a piece of 4.5" round silicone ducting would bend enough to conform to the oval snorkel. Anyone know?

Re: L69 ducting idea

Unless someone beats me to finding out the exact size needed, in a couple weeks I will resume my quest for ultra cheap power and thrills by ordering a set of both 5" to 4" reducers and 4.5" to 4" reducers from www.siliconeintakes.com. whatever set fits best I'll keep. The company said they'd take back unused reducers and at the time of this post they appear to have the best prices also.

I bought replace ment duct work to my dual snorkel air box on my L69 years ago from NextGen Parts (part of Year One). Give them a check, they might still have them.

I just checked a BUNCH of places (Year One, Classic Industries, RockAuto.com, buy-oem-parts.com) and no one has it listed. I know Year One used to have it. It might be worth giving them a phone call. Or maybe even call some dealerships (see if they have new/old stock).

When I got mine, I recall, I had to bend/form them to what I needed (but they were identical matches to my original ones). Perhaps check Summit Racing or a parts store for ducting that you can flatten out to the right dimensions.

Re: L69 ducting idea

Well, I waited and the silicone part was out. After that went to the the junk yards and eventually found a couple of GM air hoses that fit a dual snorkel intake. One is part number 14024595 and think it came off a Suburban with a TBI V-8 -- nice fit, especially on the passenger side where it's more cramped near the air diverter. The second hose is GM part 15529814 and also fits the dual snorkel. This hose came off a Chevy 1500 with a TBI V-6 works on the driver's side but is several inches shorter than the first hose. The first hose only cost $10 and the second was free for that was cool. I'll post a picture later.

Re: L69 ducting idea

Cool! If they look allright and do the job I just might order them. Found them at New GM Parts going at about $7 a piece. Now, these are just the hoses right? Not the scoops at the front? I would still need to get those, but I'm reluctant to cough up $75 per scoop from sites like ramairbox.com. Any ideas? Were there no other cars GM made that had scoops front and/or left that we could use? I still have the LG4 scoop, but I'm not sure if that will be restrictive compared to an L69 scoop, or if there are any differences between them at all.

Cool thing about other model's OEM hoses is it will still look OEM! I'm digging that, and the lower price tag!

Brilliant find!

Nice find! Do the two hoses look similar to each other in appearance other than the length? Lets see the pics!

I got an airduct for my L69 from Thirdgen Ranch, one of our sponsors here on the boards. $7.00 plus shipping.

I just searched their site and didn't find anything........searched for L69, dual, and snorkel. Only thing that came up was a TBI snorkel.

The hose on the ps fits nicely but is made of thinner plastic while the hose on the ds is considerably thicker, very much like stock lg4 air intake hose, though is shorter (works for now).

That looks stock! Do they hook up to the stock inlets?

Yes, they both tuck inside the air intake snorkles (not large enough to attach to outside of snorkles like originals). Still they are GM so they look right, especially the one with a part number of 14024595 as that one is longer.

Re: L69 ducting idea

Well, I started off by buying an Edelbrock 14" droped air cleaner and a K&N 14" x 3" filter. My buddy then fabracated an alum housing which didn't fit because of the dist. We had to cut the back off to get it to fit. He then copied the air inlets and the dist. between the air cleaner inlets (which I think was 110*) off of the L69 air cleaner so we could use the stock inlet duct works that came with the L69 cleaner. The air cleaner has four parts. The cover, the housing, the filter and the droped base for hood clearance. Works like a charm.

The price they are asking is outrageous- for the cost of 2 pieces of tubing and the shipping, you are dollars away from/could get a complete L69 setup.......and have an extra base, lid, and inlets(or whatever you already have for the setup) for spares or to hock to offset the cost.

Also, they were mentioned a few posts up already.
