Need help with a rebuilt Carb.
Need help with a rebuilt Carb.
Hey guys, I have had a third gen in my garage for a long while now (3 yrs). I recently have had to start driving it again, mostly back and forth to work. When i dusted the ole girl off, i had all the normal maintenance done. My carb however is not willing to work with me, lol. I have replaced all vacuum lines i can find, and even used seafoam. It looks pretty rough and the last owner decided to put a pc of a wire hanger to hold the choke on it open. It starts ok, but doesnt want to idle while cold, and i get noticable power surges in every gear and every speed. While warm it idles, but is very choppy almost like it wants to die. I have read most of these forums the last few days and have checked everything that supports the CC Q-jet system. But visual inspection is making me want to get ahold of a rebuilt carb. I live in a rural area, and everyone here tells me to go the HEI/holley route, but i do not think thats the right way to tackle the problem. So no help locally with a reputable CC Q-jet rebuilder. Question is on E-bay i see quite a few options that they say will fit my car, not sure which one i need. E4MC, E4ME, ect. The car is a 85 Z28, 305, any help is greatly appreciated, sorry for the death wall of text.

If you REALLY don't want to do this carb rebuild yourself, I'd suggest taking it to Cliff Ruggles ( don't remember the website ) as he actually knows these electronic carbs. Buying a 'rebuilt' carb from ebay or 'Bobs fix-it shop' will very likely give you a carb with lots of problems.

Thanks for the quick response guys. Ill look for Cliff's site. I love my Camaro, but the thought of rebuilding my own carb is enough to give me cold sweats, lol.
Re: Need help with a rebuilt Carb.
Ok, just got done researching Cliff Ruggles. It looks like he is one of the very best at rebuilding them, however the average wait time is looking like months. I need to have something sooner. Wife just got a new job w/ new hours and I have been babying the car the best i can for two weeks. Do u guys have any more "reputable" builders that maybe stock some built carbs. Dont need anything fancy, everything to my knowledge is bone stock on the car. Thanks again.

Yes, as long as your car isn't from Canada or something.

I dealt with almost the exact same situation a few weeks ago.
My '85 T/A had been sitting in storage for 5 years and I needed to start driving it again so I pulled her out for some work. It started and ran ok but it was down on power and had a mean bog with any throttle input so I started looking @ rebuilt carbs.
I bought a rebuilt E4ME off eBay from National Carbs, in Florida I think. Honestly it was the cheapest I could find. After swapping all the linkage and such from the old one to the new one the hardest part was remembering where everything hooks back up. I also put a new EGR valve on while I had the carb off and changed out some cracked vacuum lines. It fired up after a few cranks and I set the idle and let her warm up. I reset the idle after it was up to temp and adjusted the TV cable for the tranny and she runs like a champ. Still burns a little oil when shes cold but that's for another day.
Hope you get it all figured out and get another third gen back on the road.
