thought it was the TPI
thought it was the TPI
Worked all day trying to fix a carb problem. Car would run then die. and never seem to be very good. Got into the 84 camaro, 2.8 V6. First found the carb was very loose. Then found the starter was very loose. Replaced the positive cable, and still having the same problems. Finally ask my son if he changed the gas filter. "No" So we changed that and sure enough it ran a hell of alot better. Took it out for a test drive and it died, but not from the carb. The new positive wire shorted on the exhaust. So tomorrow get another cable. My question is how the hell do you tighten up the nuts that hold the carb on the manifold? We used everything we had to get the nuts off and put them back on. Why would they make a Rochester carb that a 1/2' wrench won't fit. Someone teach me the secret to that one.

Re: thought it was the TPI
a socket's probably a better option than wrench for the main 4 bolts. Never tried a wrench.
Re: thought it was the TPI
I think you are correct on it being a TPI. But for what others have said, I not get a socket in there or a wrench. It is a rochester Varijet is it. Anyone ever taken one off. I would like your input. Also is there a break down of this TPI on the web. I would like to know which is the idle screw. Thanks.

Your correct on it being a TPI. It is a Rochester Varijet (?). I am still looking for someone who has removed one. A socket and wrench no go on most of them. Used a needle nosed plyers to tighted them. The bolts are surround by the TPI, not an easy thing to get at.
Also is there a diagram of this TPI on the web, so I can tell which screw is the idle, also the adjustment on other fuel screws and there location.
thanks.

Why do you keep referring to "TPI"? If it is a carb, it is not "Tuned Port Injection".

I am thinking of grinding down a wrench just enough to work. I was hoping to be done but problems with the accelerator pump and idle circuits. Coming off for a full meticulous rebuild. This explains why I want to modify a wrench to work. Re: thought it was the TPI
Hi everyone tpi is a beatiful cosmetic look Ihave a problem though. I had my brakes redone from sitting for 20 years very good greased now my camaro 5,7tpi vet motor , at idle 1,000 rpms put foot on nibble on gas slowly doing 10 mph it stays at 1,000 and even seems to pick up speed I saw a screw on THE BACKSIDE OF THE PULL BACK CABLE can i put it in a lil too let idle go down then take off battery to reset factorty settings? at 45 mph she won't seem to slow at all , even when Ithrough in neutral. at this rate i am going to need brakes for real reason while just rusted together from sitting from new 20 years! Lucky 1, if I am understanding what you are saying, that screw you are talking about most likely wont lower your idle. The computer controls the idle through the IAC valve. Most likely, that is the source of your idle issues.
