You can do more, and more easily by swapping to carb (in my opinion). I say this because for me, learning the software, programming, buying all the programming stuff, etc. was just not my cup of tea.

And in NC, you can get away with it (as long as you go to a Joe Blow shop not in an emissions county for an inspection).

But know it's not cheap. Carb $250 - $400, intake $200 - $300, fpr $100, dist $125, TC lockup $100, another $150 misc parts - that's almost $1000 (in new parts prices).

But, you can then do anything you desire motor-wise without trying to reprogram some chip to understand it.

But also recognize ... gas is hitting $4 a gallon, and you'll cut your mileage in half instantly going to carb ... you should be getting close to 30 hiway now, you'll be extremely lucky to ever see 20 after a carb swap. My current setup I get 17mpg hiway.

Re: 305 tbi keep tbi or go carbed

first go to the tbi section and read. i went to carb and enjoyed it for a little while. a holley carb is a never ending adjustment project as well. and unless you are good with carbs it is a pita. and if they say it doesnt need adjustment they are lieing to you.t is is a mechanical advance which will also have to be played with.

i went back to tbi and maybe lost a lil hp up top. but the driveability all around is better. do the ultimate tbi mods. then read thru the tbi part of the forum. get a chip from harris performance after you are thru and go from there. unless you like messing with it most of the time i would stay with tbi. you will only be giving up a few ponies for a lot less headache.

and like stated above you will have to find a way to control the tranny lock up.

wow those are some high prices. an edelbrock performer eps intake can be had for around 130.00. fpr for around 70.00/ toggle for tc lock up and wire for less than 20.00. good working hei dizzy can be had for under 100.00 on ebay.

Re: 305 tbi keep tbi or go carbed

Iv messed around trying to tune TBI / Speed density systems for years. you'll have more time invested then you ever would want to know and about $500 to $1000 in programmers, burners, chips, software, tools, wide bands, home fabricated MAF setups to measure incoming air, laptops and that's a ball park on the cheap end of things. I swap to carb simplicity over completely. nothing but metering rods and jets switches from here on out. The only nice car to tune was one of my 4thgens that had a flash-able PCM, that only took a ALDL cable and some software.
