Electric Fuel Pump Question
Ok, when i first got my car the fuel pump was located in the engine bay, of course that was too much work for the pump to handle, so i bought a new one thats exactally the same, and put it at the back of my car right where the fuel hose comes out. Well the fuel pump works fine and all, just every now and then it makes different noises and i loose fuel pressure.
What could this be? it it overheating?
I would like to note, that if i step on my brakes kinda hard me fuel gauge in my cluster goes down, then evens out, or when im going uphill it appears as though i have more gas than i should.
My fuel pressure gauge that goes to the carb reads 6-7 im not sure if thats psi or what, but thats when its good.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Question
Is there still a pump in the tank? If you're pulling through a dead intank pump that could put some strain on the new pump.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Question
No actually in shop class we took out the old fuel injected pump, since the previous owner converted it

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Question
The gauge is acting normal, the fuel is sloshing around in the tank. 6-7 psi is more than enough, you don't need any more pressure.
Now when the pump is making noises and you loose fuel pressure is the fuel level also low, like never does it when the tank is full but at a certain point on the gauge it will start acting up? This problem would be that the pick up is not staying in the fuel and you are sucking air. In the tank there should be a baffle to keep the pick-up submerged in fuel.
**EDIT** Also if the sending unit was for an EFI in order to use an external pump the original fuel pump in the tank needs to be removed and the tube extended to the bottom of the sending unit. If someone left the old pump in there this could be causing a problem as well.
You already answered above but make sure that when the pump was removed you extended the tubing low enough.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Question
I know this is kind of a stupid question, but are you using a carb fuel pump or just an inline FI pump with a bypass setup like a Mallory 4309?
