Flat Air Cleaner Top?

Hey all,

We all know that stock thirdgen hoods don't have the best clearance for taller filters on carbs even with a drop base, so what I am looking for is a 14" air cleaner top that is NOT domed. Just looking to get a little more clearance under the hood. Having quite a hard time finding one. Any suggestions where I might find one?

Thanks

Re: Flat Air Cleaner Top?

What I've found is that with a drop base and a 3" tall element, there's very little room to the top of the choke horn. A flat top (and I've modified a couple looking for more hood clearance) actually makes contact with the horn and there's little room if any room for air to pass.

My compromise was to modify the sheet metal frame that's makes up the underside of the hood (to allow clearance) and then a K&N Extreme air filter lid to provide adequate airflow.

Thanks for the quick reply. I actually have an 80's era holley 750 competition series carb with the choke horn factory milled off so that might not be an issue for me. I was also considering trimming the sheet metal frame as well.

Re: Flat Air Cleaner Top?

Perhaps a 2" element would do the trick? As far as I know there's still enough airflow through a 2" x 14" K&N filter to satisfy the needs of a fairly potent engine.
As for cutting into the hood, it didn't take too much work, and it's not really obvious unless you're looking for it. With an insulation mat, it wouldn't be visible at all.
