Car: 1984 Trans Am
Engine: 305
Transmission: 700r4 automatic
Cold start high RPM's
hey guys i have a 1984 trans am with the 5.0 engine my question is when i start my car up in the morning or afternoon even when its cold or hot when i start it the engine revs up to about 2200 rpms and i have to hit the gas to lower it usally takes about 3 or 4 minutes to drop down to 700 rpms is that normal please help thank you

That's the normal choke/high idle function, but the RPMs are a little too high.
Is the underhood emissions sticker still on your car? It gives the proper RPM level. I could go out and look under mine, but it's dark and cold out there (and my car has an LS1 in it now... ).

It's to dark and cold to here to check and lucky you I havnt had the time or money to upgrade mine yet

you can lower the fast idle speed by turning the screw that's buried up in the choke linkage. 1200-1500 is a good rpm to shoot for.

they want that kind of rpm to get the converter up to temp as fast as possible.. but if cold start emissions aren't a concern, there's no need to run it that high.. notice that it also says to set the timing at 6 BTDC but these smog choked engines really only wake up with around 10 BTDC....
