350 build

Hi I'm new to this forum and I just wanted to know what kinda power I should be expecting with this combination:

Iron vortec heads
Edlebrock preformed intake
Holley 570 street avenger
280h comp cam
Flat top pistons
Hooker short tube headers

I know the heads have been machined but I don't know exactly how much. I do know that my 475 lift isn't hitting and that's about as much as I know. I've head of people getting 370 hp and 400 lbs tq with these heads but they have had work done to them

Re: 350 build

350, they are 906 iron vortecs. After doing some research I found out they are great stock heads, I thought I was stuck with swirl port until I looked at the intake bolts.

Are you sure about the lift of the cam? A 280H should be .480" lift.

You're a little under-carb'd and under-intake'd. A 600-650 CFM carb would be better, and a Performer RPM is more suited to the cam (although it's not that great of a cam).

You're probably in the 350 HP range. With a better cam, intake, and carb, 400 should be a cake walk.

Re: 350 build

350, my mistake...Not much room for improvement on the vortecs. Maybe some polishing of the intake port short turn. I agree with a bigger carb.

Re: 350 build

So basically if I wanna get any real improvement I should look at some new heads? I don't have the cash now but in the future I was looking at the afr 195 eliminators and a 670 carb, after I build my tranny and rear to hold more hp

Re: 350 build

400 is good street horse power, get a carb, rpm air gap intake and LONG tube headers, if you have a dremel port match the exhaust ports on both head and header

Personally, I have no love for those Street Avenger carbs. Or vacuum secondary carbs in general, for that matter.

With the right stall, a double pumper will do much better than a VS carb. A 650 will support the power you're talking about just fine.

The weakness of the Vortec heads is the exhaust ports. That's why I'd say get a better cam as well. One with a little more exhaust duration to help them do what the intakes do.
